Biography

Python looked down at the water beneath him. His reflection rippled, but never changed. He saw the same earth tone browns, the same pink eyes, the same blood red. He sighed and turned away, looking instead at the crystals around him. The beautiful, vibrant colors sparkling in the light of the sunset made him feel a tinge of joy. There they were, standing strong and proud, unashamed of what they look like. He wished he could feel that way. It had been years, but everyone in the clan still saw him the same way. A monster. A bad omen. A curse. A copy. Another him. Python paced a few steps and then settled down on the heightened shoreline just before the water and looked out at the sea. What’s out there? He wondered, thinking there must be more to this earth than Sornieth. More than his flight, more than his clan. What if I ran away? He pondered on that for a moment, before his chain of thought was broken by the sound approaching footsteps. He turned to see his mentors Rock and Arcane rushing towards him. “There you are,” the nocturne started, a hint of worry in her voice. “Rock’s been looking everywhere for you. He said you didn’t show up for your training again.” Python’s feathered crest flattened to his neck. “I’m sorry,” was all he was able to say. I just needed some time. “There is no ‘sorry’,” Rock replied, his strong voice loud and clear. “You need to stop running off.” He paused. “You’ll never get over it if you don’t talk about it.” The young coatl shifted uncomfortably. They know? After a moment of silence, Arcane spoke. “You’re not your father, Python.” She stepped closer and sat beside him, looking down at her own reflection. “You are your own individual, and you can’t keep letting your fears and self-doubt hold you back.” “She’s right,” said Rock, the large guardian now sitting beside them as well. “There will always be things that some dragons can’t forget,” he went on. “Your father hurt a lot of us, especially your mother, and did some terrible things. That’s no lie.” “But your father isn’t you,” Arcane finished. She looked down at the water, and motioned for the rest to do the same. “Python. Look down, and tell me who you see.” Confused, he peered into the water, unsure what the point of this was. “I see you, Rock, and me." Arcane reached down and gently stuck her hand in the water, disturbing the calm surface. She waved it around and let the water settle. Once again, she asked Python to tell her who he saw. “You, Rock and me.” “And who?” “And me,” he said, peering down at his reflection. “Just us? Arcane asked once more. Python peered down and checked once more, taking a moment to really look at the faces reflected in the water. “Yes, just us,” he responded. “Why?” Arcane chuckled and stood up, and Rock did the same. “When you looked down, did you see your father?” Python looked back down at his reflection, seeing clearly only himself looking back at him as he started to grasp what Arcane was saying. “No,” he replied quietly, a gentle warmth filling him. Arcane and Rock looked at each other and smiled, before turning and heading away. “Come on then,” Arcane called back as she spread her wings in preparation to take flight. “Let’s get back to training.” Python took one last glimpse at the dragon in the water beneath him, and smiled before taking off. “I’m me.” |
