Neptune and his mate, Octavia were two of the most innocuous and unassuming of the staff and permanent residents at the Silent Crow. They stopped at the outpost one day for drinks and before anyone knew it, they were working as guards. To be fair, Bogsneaks make excellent guards and the Silent Crow was in need of security. However, the circumstances of the pair's employment have always seemed a bit off. The Silent Crow is hardly an ordinary place to work and near no one finds themselves working there through casual circumstances.
And yet, somehow Neptune and Octavia remained largely unaffected by the politics of the outpost and its dealings in the rest of the Tangled Wood and the surrounding territories. During their time at the Silent Crow, the pair's children were sent off to their apprenticeships with almost no fuss at all. The inn guards held down their positions as trusted underlings in the chancellors' hierarchy for several years before they finally moved on.
Neptune, in a word, is dutiful. He takes pride in his work and pride in his lineage. The other members of the staff often wondered what, precisely, was going on with him but he is just so unassuming that it was hard to believe he came to work at the Silent Crow for the same reasons as the rest of them. Maybe there's something he's not saying. The rest of the staff dismissed any rumors as mere speculation.
It was Octavia who left the outpost first. She was a strong, sturdy guard, but her heart wasn't in it anymore. She was listless and restless and often spoke of leaving the Tangled Wood entirely. Finally, Neptune let her go. He wanted to go with her, but he felt that his business at the outpost wasn't done. He said a heartfelt goodbye to his mate and carried on without her, stalwart and focused as ever. He left the outpost and his connections in the Tangled Wood about a year afterwards. He has yet to be reunited with Octavia.
