For as long as he could remember, Luminous had an extreme distaste for the substance called water. Among his siblings, he was the quiet, perceptive one. At least that's what he thought, anyway. The rest of them were a very rowdy bunch – always going off to explore beyond the nest and getting into mischief. He never thought of himself as a high-strung or anxious dragon, yet this fear of water remains with him to this very day...
However, his fear was not unjustified then. As there always seemed to have been a number of unsettling rumours circling about the clan... The latest rumour of that time was of a dangerous beast...
His siblings were all gathering around the fairly large pool of water on the border of their clan's lands. He reluctantly followed along behind them, only to see what they are up to. He would have preferred to have been reading an interesting book right about now, but he felt, being one of the older siblings, that he should at least attempt sometimes to keep them out as much mischief as he possibly could manage. Since the last incident they had gotten themselves into was not a pretty one, that's for sure.
"Hey, hey. Did you hear that there's a Kelpie lurking beneath the surface of this water?" his brother excitedly chirped out, to all those who happen to be listening.
"If you fall in, they say it will pull you in and make it so that you will never again see the light of day."

To most Light Dragons, the mere thought of never seeing or bathing in the warm rays of light again, this fear was very mutual. Even he felt that way, even though he was still a hatchling, as a sickening feeling of anxiety began to build in his chest.
Yet despite all of the perturbed looks on their faces, him included, his brother continues. "But I hear you will learn your fate, if you manage to appease the great beast."
"There’s no such thing as fate!" another sibling cried out, in complete denial of the entire story. He wish he were only so bold.
"Apparently if you can solve its riddle, it will think better of eating you."
This all was complete and utter hogwash, though. Now as an adult, he knows better. It is clear to him now that whoever started that horrid rumour was intentionally baiting all Light Dragons, knowing full well that most of his kind are always on an endless pursuit for more knowledge and process a love for logic and solving riddles. But he was too young—too foolish, to comprehend that, like most hatchlings.
Later that day, he witnessed his fellow siblings dabbing their little paws into the water, for what looked to be just harmless fun. He left them to that, as it was preferable than the other alternatives, such as causing havoc in the nesting grounds like the last time, or who knows what else...
Feeling tired, he soon decided to take a little nap. He pulls his wings in closer, while tightly shutting his eyes and then lets sleep take him.
Suddenly, his eyes snapped open. And he quickly accessed his surroundings, something loud, that had vaguely sounded like voices, had awakened him from his slumber, but he wasn’t yet certain what these voices were saying, as the voices were being drowned out by the a combination of not only a loud crack of thunder, but as well as the sound of rain pounding just outside. He only knew that whatever awaited him beyond the nesting site, would not be favorable.
Ahead of him, he blearily makes out a dark, tall shape coming closer to him. Whoever it was, they were shouting loudly, with a desperate edge to their voice.
Once they were finally within his sight of him, he could see it was one of the older dragons.
Wearily, they stop in front of him, and raise their wings up over his head to shield him from the torrent of rain. He coughs, and catches his breath, before speaking to him.
"L-Luminous... I hate to be the one to tell you this, but..."
Oh, no. From the sound of his voice, this cannot be good news... Did his siblings do something again? Were they the ones who caused the place to flood? What is it? He must know. He listens attentively to what the aged dragon has to say next...
"...Your..." he lets out another loud cough. Running here clearly was too much of a feat for him.
"Y-Your..." he wheezes some more, and then tries again. Only, something was different. Tears appeared to be welling up in his eyes this time. Either whatever it is he has to say is too hard to say out loud, or the run really took its toll on him.
"It’s too late, Luminous... All your siblings are no longer of this world."
Eh?
It felt like his heart had completely turned to ice at those words. He wished time would stop. He needed more time to process these words... But the curtain of thick, heavy rain only continued to fall between them, and it was clear that his wish would not be granted.
"I-I... don't know why... but... when this whole area was overtaken by a flood... they were by the water, so..."
No. Stop. Stop talking... He didn't want to know.
"I’m sorry. They were swallowed up by the water."
He didn't really feel like he was entirely present any more. It was as if his soul had left his body and he was looking down on himself, standing there in utter shock.
Then all of a sudden he found himself slowly, and unconsciously, moving towards the direction he remembers last seeing his siblings... it was by that pool of water, as he recalled.
Yes. This all must be just one very terrible dream... They all will still be there, playing by the water, like they always were...
"No, stop—not that way! The flooding is even worse that way!" the dragon called out, but his voice was merely a whisper, droned out by the fierce howling wind.
Then, he quickened his pace. Faster. He must move faster.
At this point, he was no longer thinking as he lets his feet carry him down the path—no, what used to be the path, to where the pool of water had always been.
But all around him was just one thing. Water. Water as far as the eye could see.
He was forced to a complete halt. There was no "single" pool of water any longer. The entire landscape beyond was a blanket of nothing but water.
He never did see that so-called water creature... but perhaps it was a good thing that he hadn't.
......
Now, whenever he nears the water, he is careful to not stray too close, for fear of falling over the edge into the dark watery abyss below, and meeting the same "fate" as his siblings did...
Also, he tries to avoid everything that has to do with water. That includes rain. As just seeing water causes all those memories from his childhood to come flooding back into his mind.
He lets out a bitter laugh. It's ironic really, not only is he the exact colour of the water, he was also named after the "luminous" light that can be seen reflected on the water's surface.
He wistfully looks to the sky, still lost in thought. If only, he could meet someone who could help him overcome this fear of the watery depths...
To be continued...
