Auro has never been good with other dragons. They're usually too loud, move too much, or just generally are too much. But Novi isn't. They sit together in Novi's room and let each other sit in silence. It's nice.

This one is loud, moves too much, and is way too warm for comfort. Yet, yet, Auro likes the smooth feeling of Zebedian's little sculptures and how he can fight for himself. Auro can handle himself but he is a bit jealous of Zebedian's breath.

The Call

The earth speaks. She rumbles when a sudden blast is taken to her crust. She whispers warnings as wind dusts off long forgotten nooks and crannies. She growls when someone tunnels and chips into her stone. Usually, she only shifts and speaks quietly, but even the patient crack given enough time.

After he broke through the thick crust of his egg, the hatchling laid on the warm stone of the earthen flight too weak to move. His shallow breaths echoed far too loud in the silence and he whimpered a call. He needed an answer. Anything.

A rumble replied. It was soft and faint but a merciful reply. The hatchling whined as he forced a tail to lift and then thud against the earth. Small tapping echoed back. He tapped his tail back. The melody started to expand, including rumbles, taps, and whispers. As they spoke to each other, the song started to grow stronger.

They stopped and Auro couldn’t stand the silence. He slammed his tail against the ground over and over, begging for a response. He writhed on the ground, trying to follow the fading sound but too weak to stand. A singular tap answered his efforts before the earth rumbled and shook. The cavern was cool and dark, but her faint call centered on the edge.

He pulled himself inch by inch towards the cavern. Their voice grew stronger as he neared. Just another inch and he could slip into the cool embrace. But unknown claws took him away from them. He beat against the warm scales of the dragon capturing him with every part of his body. When he heard the flute-like chirps from the dragon, he curled up and pressed his claws against his ears. That noise. Not his. Those sound weren’t part of the melody.

The Split, which cracked across his homeland, was empty. Nothing but rubble and bones were found at the bottom. He has heard the same story many times, but he knew it hadn’t been. He remembers the song. Years may have passed but he still hears their whispers and he loyally follows. One day, he will hear them with the same clarity and pureness. What happens between now and then, he doesn’t much care.
