Biography
LUCIEN
Flower Witch
"Flowers cannot bloom forever, and nor can you."
No two flowers are alike. Such is the beauty of the world.
Since he was a hatchling, Lucien was always fascinated by nature, particularly the many blossoms and blooms that sprang to life all around him. Their dizzying colors and scents and shapes were a delight to his young eyes, and like a true Light dragon, he sought to learn all he could about them. It started with basic identification techniques, knowing a poppy from a rose, a dahlia from a zinnia. Then he learned to tell subspecies apart, gleefully investigating the most minute differences between flowers, perhaps hoping that some day, he might discover a subspecies of his own.
If he did that, he planned to name it after his mother as an everlasting tribute to her memory. She'd passed when he was young and just learning about his boundless love for Sornieth's flora; it seemed the best way to honor her.
Eventually, though, the flowers he could recognize were not enough. He labored away in the hot sun some days, in the pouring rain on others, making his way around Sornieth in pursuit of petals he had not yet encountered in all his reading. As much as he loved the Lightweaver's vast resources, he knew they could not contain everything in the world, and that it would take a measure of bravery and enthusiasm on his part to go beyond the reach of codices and scrolls. And so Lucien traveled around the world, paying special heed to the tropical flowers of the Viridian Labyrinth and the dry desert blooms in the Shifting Expanse, climates so greatly foreign to him.
It was in the Tangled Wood, though, that he finally found a flower he was unprepared to meet, and it spelled his doom. Much like the rest of the Shadowbinder's domain, this flower was not so much beautiful flora as it was a nasty trick. Though its petals were iridescent and alluring, its scent was rank. Worse still, the stingers in its stem were an effective defense mechanism. When Lucien plucked the flower to preserve it for future study, the spines shot into his palm, and the paralytic toxins took hold. It was only a matter of minutes before the flower had done its work and taken root once again in fresh soil beside Lucien's body.
But, as most witches of Nyx Coven, Lucien returned to the world of the living, albeit with a hazy shadow in his mind. He awoke surrounded by fiery orange flowers in the heart of the Pyrrhic Vale, and when he breathed, the very field seemed to breathe with him.
V
Since then, he has continued with his studies, undaunted by the tragedy that befell him in the Shadowbinder's dark lands. He is more careful, though, about the plants that he handles, and he only gives his mate the finest of flowers as presents, after thoroughly checking each one for deadly defense mechanisms. Despite their dangers, they are still the most beautiful thing in his life (second to Aurore, of course), and he could never dream of letting them go.
