When she was born, it was beneath the wan light of a quarter moon, in the depths of her mothers' swamp. Her mothers probably aren't gods, but rumors circulate of their cursed divinity; they are spoken of in harsh, fearful whispers. Despite their reputation, they name her Kybus, so she remembers her roots. They raise her with care and teach her the ways of hedgewitches. They are mothers, and they are Mothers. Kybus never wants for love or knowledge.
The ways of witchcraft come easy to her. She chatters happily with the plants and the dead, and they find enough amusement in her easy cheer that they do her little favors. When called upon to gaze into the future, she finds the future gazing back.
The whispering winds tell her that she should leave and find something more. The waters part for her just as they part for her mothers, and when she tells them of her plans they look a little sad and a little proud and send her off with their blessings.
