BIOGRAPHY
Obadiah was raised in a small village not far from the Cairnstone Rest. It was not a particularly interesting place, except for its deep-seated love of ancestor worship and its equally persistent problem with the undead. As a child, he quickly grew weary of the constant attacks, and was baffled by his family’s refusal to do anything about it. Surely there was someone in the clan who could ward the village; surely at the least they could stop the ceremonies inviting spirits from the afterlife. But this was the Earthen way of life, and if Earthborn dragons are anything, they are very, very stubborn.
So he struck out on his own, searching for a safe, stable place where he could live his life in peace. He was a scholar, after all, not a fighter. This teenage Obadiah thought perhaps he could enlist in a university in Arcane- why he thought this was the safest place in Sornieth, well, who could say. He quickly discovered that the Arcaneborn were even worse, with their reckless disregard for safety and common sense. He stayed just long enough to pick up the very basics of runework, and then ran for his life. And life went on. No matter where he went, there were dragons (usually mages) doing stupid things. He fell into undertaking almost against his will, but somebody had to do it, and he didn’t trust anyone else to do it right. He bounced from clan to clan and Flight to Flight, and with each move, his bitterness grew. He grew into a cold, standoffish man, and his morbid profession didn’t help him make friends. When he finally arrived in the Shifting Expanse it caught him off guard, how much he liked them. He had thought they’d be no better than Arcane, yet he found the Lightningborn an immensely practical people, not given to superstition. Prowler’s Pointe is certainly not where he saw himself, but they share his distrust of mages and his blase attitude toward death, which is more than he can say of most places. (The fact that his business booms here is not lost on him, either.) He’s become a familiar face around town, who inspires respect if not affection. While the civilians aren’t fans of the customers he draws, they must admit they sleep easier with him around. |
