______ Lokaci made a deal with the Crownless King many years ago, bright-eyed and beating with young blood as hot as a blue star. He walked into the Court Beneath the Black, eyes burning from the darkness, and came out with troubled eyes above his sharp magnolia-white smile. To this day, no one knows what he traded away to the Crownless, but the turning of the seasons have no affect on him, dusk-burning autumns and springtime smelling of petrichor.

______ There is a lonely old ache in his pomegranate eyes. No matter where he goes, he always returns to the depths of the shadowed valleys of the Tangled Wood when the nights creep longer and the wolves stalk the forests with their wet teeth hymning. No matter how far away he is, by Samhain his unwilling feet are on the black-loam path to the Court Beneath the Black, his way lit by the fireflies gathered in his hair.

______ He is trapped here, within this night that stretches on unending and heavy as a landslide, this night edged with sharp fox teeth and teeming with rot-stinking brambles. Trapped within his thunder-stained skin and splintered soul. Still he hopes, a wanderer in the wet dark searching, and he hopes so fiercely it will be the one thing this bitter earth remembers of him three thousand years hence.
