Nessarose
The Omen
Child of the Moon

The shadow of a blood moon does strange things to a nest, and the dragons within each affected egg grow to be strange creatures. When Lux and Rhianon laid their clutch together in the darkest lairs of the Tangled Wood, they paid no mind to the skies above, nor the tales of old. While one moon averted its eyes, the second blushed a deep crimson at the sight of the mates, a warning sign, an unintentional omen.

The warning was clear, but the parents were ignorant. And Nessarose was just as strange as the legends said it would be. She should have been born in deep hues, blues and purples with dark scales to match the night – a proper Shadow dragon. But as she cracked open her egg, her siblings right alongside her, the blood moon passed behind a cloud, and the filtered light streamed through the tangled branches of the forest, past the glowing fungi that grew like gossip along the undergrowth. And the strange, strange light hit the shell at the same moment the hatchling breathed her first breath.

For a moment – a moment which neither parent fully remembers – the dragoness and her siblings were each dark-scaled Skydancers, their antennae glistening and quivering. But the moonlight would not lose, and in an instant, the young beings were each drenched in crimson, their scales hardened like moonstone.

Their parents were cursed on that day, to share the markings of blood-moon children. In a moment of distress, the mother turned and howled her curses to the deities, fleeing the forest. The father, ashamed of his mate’s deeds and his own foolhardiness, cast himself to his own deity, hoping the Shadowbinder would forgive him.

The hatchlings were left abandoned, wailing, in the dark. The glowing fungi, the cursed moonbeams, their brilliant scales, was the only source of light. It was days before a passing dragon found them, half-starved. The kindly Nocturne tried to care for them. But that dragon soon died, the first of many, in an attempt to accompany the blood dragons.
The dragons grew. Their only constant was one another, and the moons of Sorneith – the moons who had inadvertently become parents to the siblings. They raised the hatchlings together. They learned to fight and to hunt, and to trust nobody except the moons, to trust nothing except their own instincts. The mewling, abandoned hatchlings became dragons with cruel talons and sharp fangs and a vengeance like no other burning within them, as bright as their scales. Soon, they parted ways – the moons bidding their offspring to make their way into the world.

A world which knows these dragons as a legend come to life, a terror in the night. Blood dragons are a dangerous sort, known for their vicious ways. Most Clans shun them. They are warmongers, harbingers of death – omens of trouble.

And Nessarose is no exception. While many of her siblings soon gave way to the call of the deities, this Skydancer is fierce and relentless, and soon found her way to the Molten Scar. A fire raged within her, a match to her anger, to her scales, to the terrain which drew her forth. Here, she would fight – and here, she would stay.
