The Gold
Once there was a queen with scales so beautiful it was said they were carved from pure gold. Hundreds of suitors came to vie for her hand in marriage, and all were left with broken hearts. She cared nothing for love or family; rather, she was concerned only with obtaining more riches. At first, she placed exorbitant taxes on all who lived within her lands, but she soon realized that her subjects hated her for it. The last thing she wanted was a revolt, so she turned to darker means to obtain her precious gold. Summoning a demon into her bedchambers, she asked, “What must I do to be loved and rich alike?”
“It is simple,” said the demon. “Every day, bring me a tooth. Every day that you do so, you will find your hoards filled to the brim with gold. But beware – if you miss even one day, you will become one with the thing you love so much.”
Of course, the queen was greatly pleased by this offer. A tooth? How simple! Dragons generally kept a few of their lost teeth around. So she sent out a declaration across all of her territories: every dragon that brought her a tooth would have their taxes lifted substantially. Repeat donors would receive a bonus in their monthly pay.
At first, everything went splendidly. Most dragons had saved a few of their teeth from hatchlinghood, and all they had to do was give them to the queen. They didn’t know why she wanted them, but who cared? It was basically free money for a worthless, sentimental item. They were happy, and so was the queen. Every night her hoards were mysteriously filled, despite being locked and under heavy guard. All was well.
After a year had passed, tensions had risen. Dragons had run out of spare teeth to give. Those who went too long without a donation were fined heavily. As the only way to support their families, some dragons began pulling out their own teeth. They shrugged off the pain and told themselves it would all turn out all right in the end. The queen, meanwhile, continued profiting off their suffering. She didn’t care that most of the teeth brought to her were now red instead of white.
A few more months passed. Less and less teeth were brought in every day, until finally, one day there were none.
She stepped into her bedchambers hesitantly. The demon was waiting.
“Have you brought me something?”
“No, but I’m sure I will have some tomorrow! Just wait-"
“That was not the deal. I am true to my word. Are you true to yours?”
Realizing her fate, the queen ran to the door. It was locked from the outside.
“You know, you could give me your own teeth. Just one. It won’t hurt that much.”
It knew her answer already, didn’t it? Of course it did, for she could already feel herself turning into a statue of solid gold. A fitting end, she supposed.
“And ruin my beauty? Never.”
To this day, there is a golden statue in the ruins of a magnificent castle. It is strung with bloodstained teeth. From where? No one knows.
You can go into the castle. You can enter the queen’s bedchambers. You can even touch the statue.
But never, never try to steal a tooth.
