B I O G R A P H Y
In Plague, nobody cares who you are or what you can do. They just care that you’re strong enough to survive. And Zamora, despite her quirks, showed every sign of being strong. Unfortunately, her quirks were enough to earn her enemies - a sure sign of doom in Plague, where dragons must stick together to be strong. When she was still a small hatchling, there was no real sign of anything wrong. Zamora tumbled and scuffled amidst the bones and dirt with her nestmates, avoiding the infection and disease that always runs rampant in Plague territory, and showed signs of being the strongest in her clutch of hatchlings even as a few of her siblings sickened and died. But when they started developing into adults, that was when the disaster struck. Zamora seemed shocked at her anatomy. She couldn’t get used to the two extra antennae growing from the gem in her forehead, and constantly itched at them, wanting them off. At the same time, she began to insist on being referred to as a girl, and when questioned, declared that the Shadowbinder had played a cruel trick and switched her body with that of a boy’s. Some of the older dragons in the clan had seen this before. Others, mostly her own peers, mocked her, claiming that she just wanted attention and that an “oddity” like her couldn’t survive in Plague territory. The bullying drove Zamora out from the shelter of her peers - again, a sure sign of doom in Plague territory. In the end, after a long day of teasing and wild-goose-chases to catch up to her clanmates, Zamora found herself alone at night in a nest of bones, with a group of snakes twining around her, their fangs bared and their eyes set on the lone hatchling stupid enough to stumble into their nest. Panicked, she ran. She ran until she couldn’t run anymore, and then as soon as she slowed, she felt the searing pain of a bite scorch through her leg. It collapsed underneath her as the venom did its deadly work. Fueled again by adrenaline and panic, and the sheer determination of Plague dragons to survive, Zamora took to the air, beating and clawing at the air with her fledgeling wings and somehow managing to rise. As luck would have it, a blistering wind blew over Plague that night. Zamora let it carry her away from the only home she’d ever known. That night, that long horrible night of flight and pain, was the longest Zamora had ever known, or has known since. She drifted off many times in the air, nearly falling to the ground and cracking her skull before she jolted awake and remembered she was flying. All during the night as well, she could feel her body subtly shifting - not in the way she wanted it to, where her broader chest would slim and her antennae would drop to only two - but in a way that scared her, like giant boils rising from her skin and wings. When the day broke, Zamora collapsed to the stone of a ruined building, exhausted and in pain. Her wings and skin were covered in an outbreak of gembond. She was in Light territory, far to the east of Plague, and she was utterly, completely alone and friendless. Luck was again on her side. Just as she was about to give up and pass out, a golden Wildclaw named Areli stumbled across her. He immediately saw that Zamora desperately needed help, and offered her a place in his clan. Zamora didn’t see any other options, so she accepted. It was the best decision she’s ever made. Here, nobody questions her gender, or why she carefully keeps two of her antennae clipped off. Here, nobody wants her to prove her ability to survive or bullies her for wanting to be herself. She’s found a home here, and the Plaguebringer herself couldn’t get Zamora back if she begged.
