Biography
Wolfgang and his identical twin Pippa were brought up in a clan that had almost forgotten what the Lair looked like without the Mage Quarter - a lively, colourful section of the city that traded minor enchantments for coin, or major favours for gems and valuables.
Wolfgang is the son of the Clan's fourth ruler, Apollo. Apollo was the first mage to rule, and his reign brought about a magic renaissance; mages from across the planet visited, and more than a few stayed in the clan itself. His court was powerful, and because he allowed his people to study magic freely, they unlocked a lot of secrets.
However, Apollo's reign raised a few eyebrows. He was not directly in line for the throne, but it seemed that every other candidate bowed out. His mother (Angharad) was the sister to the previous King (Pel), but she had rejected the role for herself to continue her adventurous life. She had declared this before Apollo was born, and ran a patrol outside of the Clan with her two mates.
The issue of whether she was eligible to the throne was brought into question too - Her parents were adoptive fathers, Rhys and Amyr. Rhys was the first royal in the clan to refuse the crown, as he was aware that he would have to provide an heir. You can probably guess why he wasn't too keen on that idea, but he fell in love with Amyr, and realised that if he had to choose between his mate and the Crown, that decision would not be difficult.
In fact it became almost literal. During the Night of the Nocturne, he changed from a Guardian to a Nocturne, reflecting his decision to shun his inheritance. The fact he now seemed very similar to his Mate was not lost on most people. (Thankfully he was not the only Dragon in the Lair to change species without warning, and wasn't even the only royal to do so! His brother Carver went from a fierce warrior Guardian to a much smaller, much more nimble Coatl.)
Angharad came to be in Rhys' care when his sister Mabli - the second Ruler of the Clan - hatched four Dragons. Mabli raised two, one was exalted, and she allowed Rhys to care for Angharad as his own daughter.
In other words, Wolfgang is the child of a ruler who, by all accounts, probably doesn't deserve the Crown, because his Grandfather gave up his claim to it. Pippa will rule, as she's the older twin, and no Dragon doubts her place after her Father brought so much prosperity to the clan.
