Secrets are heavy, but someone must keep them.
Secrets. Treasures. Riddles. Answers. Relics buried with the dead, holding magic long forgotten but no less potent for its obscurity. Someone must remember who and what came before. Secrets are heavy, but someone must keep them. Sphinx guards knowledge and memory alike, offering wisdom wrapped in cryptic phrases to those that seek her.
Anubis spends his time in tombs, where he has daily dealings with life and afterlife, death and rebirth, truths revealed and mysteries unraveled. He knows answers to age-old questions, but they are not his to share.
Instead he devotes himself to recording, to remembering, to recounting, filling page after page with the deeds and hopes of those who have gone before. Nothing is truly dead if it is remembered; no one is truly gone. And so the pages fill the books, words indelibly printed, volume upon volume placed reverently upon a shelf that already holds so many tomes.
Spirits pass through his chambers, lives ending and beginning with a tip of the scale. Souls are measured, counted, noted, and sent on to whatever comes next. With Anubis they leave remnants of themselves, artifacts of their lives. He hears their regrets and wishes, their secrets and fears, their triumphs and accomplishments, and forgets none of it.
Secrets. Treasures. Riddles. Answers. Mystery shrouds them both, this pair that has withstood life and death, catastrophe and recovery, destruction and creation. They were there when the world began, and they will be there until the end — remembering.
