Variant: Mooncatcher
Subvariant Blue Moon
Name: Erebos
Flight: Nature
Status of Runes: Invoked
Observations & Notes: Erebos, like his mate Nyx, is a Mooncatcher of the rare Blue Moon subvariant. He was born to a Nocturne and a Spiral deep in the Viridian Labyrinth. His parents swore he was born a Spiral, but changed immediately after he scrambled out of his egg. According to them, his Spiral form was only visible for the blink of an eye, then he was engulfed in darkness. When the darkness retreated, there sat their Pearlcatcher son in the remnants of his egg’s shell and his runes were glowing. Erebos himself remembers nothing, but to me it is apparent that he either invoked his runes immediately after birth or was maybe even born with invoked runes. Both possibilities are very rare and unusual. Though I doubt he was born a Spiral; there are means to change a dragon’s breed but this is very advanced magic and immensely painful. It’s highly unlikely Erebos should have done that at such a young age and have no memory of it. Anyway, his parents were less than happy to have such an unusual and magically gifted son. I fear they let the poor lad feel their disgust very plainly. At least they refrained from abandoning him to the Gladekeeper’s mercy but brought him here instead. Apparently, the Forgotten Sanctuary already has a reputation for taking in misfits and the unwanted. I clearly remember the day his parents walked in here, their little son in tow. He looked so forlorn, his ears dropping in despair and his eyes shining with un-cried tears. As his parents turned away from him and left without saying a word let alone a hug, it broke my heart. I don’t consider myself to be very sentimental but the despair of this little hatchling was almost palpable. After his parents had left, I took him with me to Nanna, the old snapper who is our hatchlings’ favorite story teller. I thought that might cheer him up, but when we arrived in her cave, he just curled up into a ball and quite suddenly, the whole room was engulfed in pitch black darkness. This was the first demonstration of his powers I witnessed. In this darkness, no light would shine and we stumbled around until we found the way out. The darkness he conjures is absolute. We later studied his abilities in more detail and I can say that no fire or other light source has been able to penetrate that darkness. Others more superstitious than I say that the darkness is sinister, they say they feel something lurking in it that makes them shiver.
Erebos also has an affinity for death. He says he sees if someone is deathly ill or will die in the near future. What it is exactly that he sees, he cannot say. But his predictions are always accurate. Furthermore, he can also communicate with the dead that linger in this realm. Erebos can also summon the spirits of the dead, an ability that makes him rather unpopular with Cathair and the bunch of coatls that are close to him. In general, the rather dark nature of his powers make most weary of him and he has few friends. Even his fellow Runecatchers tend to avoid him. His mate Nyx is an exception, the two are very close and spend a lot of time together. Maybe because they belong to the same variant, they have a deeper understanding for each other’s powers. Needless to say, I’m also not afraid of him and his abilities. Death is a part of life and eventually inevitable, and without darkness there is no light. And despite the dark nature of his powers, Erebos is a very kind and gentle dragon. He would never use his abilities to cause somebody harm.

The Blue Moon is considered to possess especially powerful magic as are those who are born beneath it. A rare phenomenon, those hatchlings gazing at a Blue Moon when they crack their eggshells are either treated with reverence or fear.
Nyx, is blessed with powerful and ample magical talent, she also possesses the gift of prophecy and soothsaying. Her birth was a cause for celebration that lasted a fortnight for she is night incarnated. A shadowy figure of exceptional power and beauty. Her mate Erebos, is the personification of darkness and even death bows to him. Feared by many, he is a silent watcher in the shadows. But their union is one of love and great tenderness.
