Phaedrus grew up in a clan that saw him trained as a paladin from the moment he could walk. And, like most of the young dragons chosen to walk this noble path, he took to it with an eagerness that made his parents proud. He mastered most of the weapons favoured by the Shadefighters, then went on to train in the rings. He was the pride of his clan, one of the best paladins to ever graduate from their ranks. The clan to take him in would be a lucky one indeed, but his life was a happy one, and he had no plans to leave his home. That is, till the nightmares began. There is a secret he has yet to tell, one that frightens him terribly and haunts his waking moments. His dreams have, of late, been of a sinister sort. Every being, dragon, beastclan, or otherwise, have all heard of the Shade. Some clans still regard it as a myth, but his was a clan who knew it was real and decided to combat the threat. He sees it when he closes his eyes. It’s always the same: his clan (though the setting changes from time to time, it seems to return to his clan far more frequently), slowly enveloped in a dark fog while all he can do, even as a paladin, is stand by and watch helplessly. Everything enveloped by the Shade; dragons with magic drained from their bones, eyes hollow and empty; his home crumbling to pieces before his very eyes. For the first time in his life, Phaedrus turns from the challenge and runs.

Phaedrus knows there is Shade here. He can feel it. It's not a huge portion of the clan, thankfully, but it's there, and it's worrying. Perhaps, if he defeats it, perhaps the nightmares will go away, leave him to live in peace. But..
There is a child. A child of the Shade. The elders hide it, but he knows.
How is he to get rid of a child of the Shade? He can't. The boy is eight, his father says. How is Phaedrus to even so much as harm a child?
There are other Shade hunters here. The father of the boy's father is one. Phaedrus once contemplated going to him for advice, but what is he to say? 'Your grandson is a Shade-infested abomination, did you know? Should we kill him?' No. He'd be on the floor with a bloodied nose faster than he could blink for even suggesting that.
He puts the child in the back of his mind. Perhaps when he grows, he'll be a threat, one the elders can no longer protect from the clan's eye, and then Phaedrus will be justified in getting rid of him. Perhaps not. But for now, there are other Shade worshippers here. He can begin with them, so long as he's not caught.
