Plague eggs are laid and hatched in pools of a murky green substance which seeps into the egg while the hatchling grows within its confines. Once the shell breaks, the plagueling is typically immune to any future plague or poison based attacks. Regardless of the dragons breed they are stronger and more likely to survive a plague that enters their clan. This is one of the many reasons that these dragons make for the perfect fighters, as well as due to their lack of empathy when regarding a dying creature. Of course, not all plague dragons are like this. If they were they would have taken over long ago and reigned over the land of Sornieth. Many dragons are naturally gifted with immunity to substances that would typically cause other dragons harm, and while they’re great fighters, some would rather talk it out no matter how hopeless the situation may seem.

But this story is not about one of those dragons. This story is about a much rarer dragon, a dragon bred from a part of the Scarred Wastelands that no creature, dragon or beastclan, should ever come from. Sometimes a mother is gifted with the power to discern what type of personality her hatchling will have. It gives them comfort to know that their child will not harm others or find pleasure in the pain of living things. An imperial by the name of Arisa had one such gift and as she stared at her newest hatchlings, a fond smile upon her lips, her blood suddenly chilled and she released a gasp of shock and fear. She looked down at the two eggs, both identical in nearly every way, her eyes were drawn to one that was slightly darker than the other. Whatever dragon was in this egg would be one who delighted in the fear and pain of others, who would manipulate anyone to get their way.

Making her decision, Arisa removed the egg from the green goop and took to the skies, the egg clutched tightly in her claws. There was only one place where she could dispose of the egg and have no need to fear what became of it. The ocean north of the Starfall Isles was cold and unforgiving. Many a dragon had underestimated its power and had either perished or suffered greatly. Throwing the egg into those waters would kill the evil creature inside of the egg. As she was flying over the Wrymwound however, a group of serthis spotted her. Unable to move quickly out of the way of their weapons, she dropped the egg and flew off, hoping the thing and broken upon the ground. She returned to her other egg only to find something horrible. It had been years since an egg and rotted and the hatchling within had died but her second egg was now a dull gray-green and the shape of a small hatchling could be seen inside: dead. This would prove to be a sign of the evil that had befallen the world of Sornieth.

The serthis clan gathered up the egg, which had not broken as Arisa had hoped, and placed it in the boiling pit in the center of the Wyrmwound. These half snakes were not civil towards dragons and would rather have them dead but if they could raise one as a slave of theirs, they might finally gain an advantage. What they didn’t know, however, was that the Pit increased tendencies. If a dragon was nice, they’d become completely selfless; if they were angry, they’d become a creature of rage. In this eggs case, it increased her dark desires and she went from an evil dragon to one the Shade would find worthy of keeping alive if only to see her destroy the rest of the dragons wherever they might reside.

When the pale green egg hatched, a white imperial crawled out, mewling pitifully. She was smaller than one would normally expect and the serthis were disappointed. A runt would not help them gain an advantage in any way. The leaders of this beastclan talked it over and decided that they may as well just kill her. When a serthis went to perform the deed, it found that the imperial had killed those watching her. Her scales were now stained a crimson red and they would remain that way for the rest of her life, a reminder of what she was: a cold-blooded killer. Unaffected by the loss of some of their clan mates, the serthis began to train her to kill dragons. She took a pleasure in killing small animals and as she grew, so did her strength and hunger for more bloodshed. Due to her being the only dragon in the clan, for obvious reasons, the serthis called her Widow.

With monsters such as she, it wasn’t surprising when Widow turned in the hands that had fed her since she was a hatchling. It was a dark and moonless night when it happened and it was over before anyone could react. Her scales once again took a red hue but they did not stain like they had at the time of her first slaughter. Leaving behind the bodies of the serthis clan, the imperial headed in the direction the serthis had said she had come from. There was a yearning in her heart to find her real parents. Because of how she’d been raised, she believed that all dragons were like her, killers and bathing in the blood of the slain. At the point in which she passed through a clan, there were many dragons who came to the defense and told her to leave. They had plague red eyes but that was where the similarity ended for they did not have the same dark nature as she. Disgusted by their show of what she saw as weakness, Widow flew away in a rage and vowed that she would join no clan without a backbone.

It was years later that she joined a clan, though it was no longer for the reason she'd vowed. The blood-stained dragon wished to lead a clan but knew that many saw her as a dragon with no loyalty but her own. They weren't wrong. Widow had come across a clan known as the Clan of the Lost and deemed it perfect for her take over. She would slay the clan leader and claim her throne, demanding that the other dragons pay tribute and do her bidding. Unfortunately, this plan would take longer than she'd hoped due to the loyalty that the matriarch Mordeyrin had earned through her leading of the clan. So Widow began to amass her own followers, knowing that she would need help in overthrowing the clan leader and her mate.

In doing so, Widow found a mate for herself. The dragon was silent and loyal, not to mention the fact that he would do anything she asked. Camael was a weak dragon in her eyes and needed a stronger dragon to order him around. He was who she sent out to spy on the clan's matriarch, who she ordered to do dirty deeds she didn't think were worthy of her time. Camael soon earned the title of her right-hand, feared by those who followed the clan leader and Widow herself. He was fierce and would stop at nothing to ensure that his mate became the ruler of the Clan of the Lost.

There was an underlying reason that the imperial wished to rule the clan. She'd heard tell of a story of a dragon born from the Shade itself, known only as the Lich. It had terrible powers and would serve only those that the Shade dubbed worthy. Widow saw herself as a dragon worthy of the great being and saw herself as the Shade's own daughter since her parents had tried to kill her as a hatchling. The Clan of the Lost had somehow attained the Lich, a dragon by the name of Aurkene. With the Lich's power, Widow could overthrow Mordeyrin. All she needed was time...
