necromancy is about bringing life, not about desecrating death. he has only brought good to the world.

Albali is a skilled necromancer and spirit medium whose primary job at this stage in his life is to keep Sadachbia's body from falling apart. It isn't where he'd expected to end up when he started pursuing necromancy, but it's certainly more fun to follow a clan of oracles around than it was to try and fail to revive dragons with their souls intact.

Albali is taking this turn of his life in stride. He loves Sadachbia, loves to spend time with him, and he's growing closer to the other oracles as well. Their new home isn't particularly well suited to a Wind dragon's affinities, being so deep beneath the Sea of a Thousand Currents, but he's adjusting.

He'll go anywhere for Sadachbia, and he's certain Sadachbia won't go anywhere without him.

h i s t o r y

Albali learned his necromancy at a young age, after falling in with a group of young magicians and discovering his talent for it. He started small, as most necromancers do; first plants, then animals, then the skeletons of the long deceased. He never managed to summon back their old souls, though, and Albali dreamed of bringing back a creature entirely, soul and all.

Before he could learn the secret to that, disaster struck. One of his friends had gotten too confident, and managed to lure an Emperor back to their home. Albali was the only one to escape. Even faced with the horrors of necromancy gone wrong, Albali was determined to continue his research. Rather than mourning, he returned to their home and tried, one by one, to revive his dead friends. All of them failed.

At last, Albali realized what his problem was: he had no way to communicate with their souls. He began traveling, communing with spirits wherever he could find them. After months, years, he found the drowned corpse of its Pearlcatcher, still with its pearl. He theorized that, if the pearl really was the dragon's soul, he would be able to revive it perfectly at last. But, rather than the soul of this dragon, he contacted Sadachbia.

Sadachbia was a spirit with an immense view of the future. Albali had never met anything like him, and found himself intrigued by the way it spoke, like time was infinite in both directions. He befriended this spirit, and after some time he gave up his previous goal. He offered the body he'd been so carefully preserving to Sadachbia, and the spirit accepted.

It wasn't the original spirit, but it was the first time Albali had brought both life and spirit to a body. He considered this a success. He began to travel with Sadachbia; the spirit was curious about the world and the futures it saw, and Albali needed to keep his success alive. He soon found himself obsessed with the spirit's wellbeing, though he doubted that Sadachbia had much regard for him.

Sadachbia began to gather followers, but Albali was foremost among them, eager to go wherever Sadachbia led him. Even, it turned out, when Sadachbia led him to the bottom of the sea.

Magic

Necromancy

His whole life, Albali has studied the practice of necromancy. He can reanimate dead plants, animals, dragons -- whatever is before him -- but he still hasn't brought the original soul of a creature to its original body, and he intends to master that before he gives up his studies.

Spirit Medium

Albali can contact and converse with spirits, when he tries. While traveling with Sadachbia, he sometimes contacted the spirits other dragons wanted to communicate with for a quick coin. It wasn't what he wanted to do with those skills, but it kept him and Sadachbia afloat.

Connections

Sadachbia

Each of them feels a particular sort of loyalty for the other, and Albali is at least partly sure they share some romantic feelings. But Sadachbia is a spirit who has never encountered such feelings before, and Albali thinks it's more important that they trust each other and want each other to be happy than it is that they put a name to their relationship.

Melampus

Albali has knowledge of magic, but not the sort that Melampus studies. That stuff about time, and seeing the future by going there, and the stars needing to align in just the right way to retain the memories... it doesn't make sense to him. If nothing else, Melampus has seen some strange things, and is always willing to share stories.

Leonidas

Leonidas and Albali get along, to an extent. Albali is knowledgeable about the body, especially after death, and much of Plague divination is steeped in the body. Leonidas, in turn, seems impressed that Albali can stomach the sorts of divination that he uses as a Plague seer. The two of them could consider one another friends.

Shallowspeaker

Shallowspeaker reminds Albali of Sadachbia, in that she is mysterious and deeply entrenched in the futures she sees. But she is also distinctly a dragon, and acts much more like one than Sadachbia does. Albali has the urge to try to parent her, keep her away from the dangers that he's seen in the world, and that is an unsettling feeling to have.
