Biography

aUbsH7I.gif Makream
Guardian/Second In Command
Heartfelt | Courageous | Righteous

Written and Owned by luminousnoble.

In his youth, Makream was about the least likely dragon to join a Shadow clan out of any in Sorienth. Today, he can’t picture himself outside the Misfit Miskatonic. In reflection, he can pin it down to three events, events he’s not sure how he survived… but which he’s grateful he did.

The first was his departure from the Earth Flight of his birth. He was barely grown when he flew for the Lightning Flight, eager to contribute his considerable intellect to the next generation of technology and knowledge - and to do it at a pace that actually worked for him, rather than waiting ages for monuments to rise and erode. At the time, the ambitious and innovative environment were all he needed to survive, to be happy, even. He thought he could live out the rest of his days there, in an untouched rush towards the future.

It wasn’t a mistake, per se, but he wasn’t completely right.

The second was an encounter - well, two of them. The first was with a spritely young Plague Imperial, a bit too small to be so fierce and a bit too impatient to be so inquisitive. They questioned everything about him, from his work to his ideals, with so much intensity that Makream found himself finally thrown off balance. When the Imperial finally left, dissatisfied, they left Makream abruptly unsure of just what he was looking for, or just why he was happy.

Naturally, as an enterprising young dragon, Makream had the wisdom to get outside help. He called in a favor owed by the Light Flight, and they sent him someone to help him sort himself out. The Lightweaver’s acolytes sent Greer: Son of an ancient coatl working directly under the Lightweaver herself, a devotee to truth and harmony. Greer and Makream spent a sizeable time together, trading anecdotes, technique, and the occasional forlorn glance. Makream only realized how much he treasured Greer’s presence when he was already gone.

Then when he tried to reach out to him again, he’d left the Light flight.

Makream was somewhere between heartbroken and puzzled. He wouldn’t pretend he knew Greer entirely, but he knew Greer loved his clan, family, and flight above all else. He went there himself to investigate, but returned home empty handed and more frustrated than ever. He stewed in that distress for quite some time before, as luck (?) would have it, Lithian the smartmouth returned, cheerily declaring Makream an ‘old friend’ and catching him up on everything that had happened since they parted ways. Some Spiral named Captor had started travelling and telling stories, some Pearlcatcher named Melica fell ill and somehow returned to full health by joining the Shadow Flight, some Coatl named Greer being stalked had found safety with Lithian’s own mate, Cryptograham - wait, what?

Makream visited the newly established Misfit Miskatonic very literally the moment he heard Greer was there, and grew addicted to his presence again almost immediately, despite the way his sunny personality had dimmed so much it was barely there. Makream’s fierce protective instincts were kindled as he listened to what Greer had endured, until they burned intensely enough to scorch anyone who came too close, perhaps to his detriment. But ultimately, fighting fire with fire would be necessary.

Greer’s stalker was patrolling the borders of the Tangled Wood.

Makream, refusing to let Greer be put in more danger or feel unsafe, went to confront him directly, only meaning to scare him off or persuade him to back off. Instead of listening to reason, Terren lunged, and when Makream’s vision cleared, his wings were in unusable tatters and Terren was dead, his throat in Makream’s teeth.

He staggered back to the lair of the Misfits, still covered in blood, and collapsed against Greer’s side.

Makream would never fully wash Terren’s blood from his scales, nor would his wings ever heal back properly. Even with augments and braces, he struggles to fly, and sometimes the loss overwhelms him. But love took root in his heart, for the misfits and for Greer, and despite the pain and fear, he can’t imagine himself anywhere but in their sanctuary.
