THE TEACHER
herbalist | hunter | methodical | realistic He only wished for peace but found none. Instead, his brother's blood was on his head and he could no longer live like he once did. He flew far, until his wings grew heavy, and then he ran, until his feet could not carry him, and then he dragged his body across the dust until he could move no longer. He knew only pain, hunger, and worst of all, he knew he was losing his memory. He could not explain the loss when they found him, when they wrenched him before the clan's leader and raged for justice. He could not answer for his brother, for his brother's mate, for their child. He could not answer, and sickened by his silence, they discarded him. He was banished, worse than the mercy of execution. He was bound to a boat and left to drift. He wished for sleep. He found it. He awoke, and saw the ropes frayed around him. He stood and saw sand, saw lush green forest just beyond the beach's edge, and he did not ask questions any longer. He could not remember the answers, so what would be the point? He learned to survive. He learned to grow herbs to satiate his hunger, to heal his wounds, and he learned too to thank the Gladekeeper for her blessings. He knew the island, and he cared for it. He did not wander far, and did not question the occasional shadow passing overhead--only hid from those that looked like his kind, afraid of what knowing dragonkind again would mean. He closed himself to that world long ago, what use would it be now? Then one day the dawn brought two shimmering eggs to a burrow far from his usual gatherings, but he had wandered, lead by some strange feeling. He did not question it, but did raise a brow at the appearance. He sighed, and took care to watch the eggs day and night, setting up his own sort of nesting ground to protect them. Then one day, they hatched--shimmering with the colors of the forest, of sunlight filtering through the leaves, magic in their eyes and on their bodies. He was amazed, and he was no longer alone. He did not shy from them, he treasured the sisters with their glowing pearls and burbling voices. He knew, all too soon, the world he was used to was not wide enough for these far-too-curious hatchlings. So he brought them to the gates of the Citadel he had so long avoided, and there a Guardian with magical essence crystallizing her skin answered. She answered and helped him build a home on the edge of the wall, not too far from the city but far enough he could feel at home. The Guardian vanished once she was done, and he was left alone. Days passed, months, then exactly a year from her disappearance there came a Skydancer with her head down and magic pulsing through her skin. He didn't ask questions, only--for once, he could remember, he remembered all the lessons that somehow the Guardian had left inside him waiting to be taught. So he taught the three young dragons, Cailin, Fiona, and now Vykos, all that he had been left. He taught all he could before Vykos was whisked away to lead--still too young, always too young. He did not ask questions, but his daughters did. They asked so many questions. They asked and he tried to answer.
