bio/title
written by (author) The Skydancer smiles at the feeling of wind coursing through her feathers, filling her with a certain energy. She steps further to the cliff point that she sits on, holding out of her wings to get an even better feeling of the air. She takes a deep breath, absorbing it all in… and tips herself over, diving off the cliff. How long does she fall for? She isn’t sure, but it’s only when she can see the ground barrel towards her, happy to help her meet her doom, does she open her wings and allow the wind to save her. She takes to the sky, enjoying the fresh feeling of it pushing past her. She’s going to enjoy it as much as she can before she eventually has to depart to the Tangled Woods… for a familiar feeling irks into her, driving her towards it... There had been guidance once: parents, elders, a clan. Iolana vaguely remembered warm smiles and voices commenting, “My, she has a lot of energy!” A wooden sword was gently eased into her grasp. A children’s toy—and over the years, she learned to wield real weapons, becoming a true warrior. The clan eventually moved on—or did Iolana move on from the clan? Either option was plausible: They were all Wind-born, and wanderlust ran strongly in their veins. What pulsed in the Skydancer was a restlessness that travel could not tame, however. She’d left the Windswept Plateau long ago but not yet found a clan she could feel truly at peace in. Nonetheless, she kept searching. Her fighting skills helped her find employ as a guard or fighter in different lairs. She learned, too, from the dragons who lived there, so that every time she moved on, she was stronger than she’d been when she’d arrived. Her drive to travel, and to learn from other warriors, eventually brought her to the Isle of Shadows. She had encountered dragons of the Night Warrior lineage before, and they’d told her of the Isle, where many of their kinsdrakes were trained. Iolana was soon accepted into the clan’s territory. While she learned much from them, she couldn’t help feeling that she was falling into the same old rut: Learn from different dragons, leave once her work was done, join another clan... “It’s not a bad life,” Iolana told herself, with an optimism she didn’t really feel. “It pays well, and when you’ve got a good reputation, nobody bothers you. I’ll keep going. I’ll see where the road takes me.” As it turned out, the road wasn’t going to take her anywhere else. Iolana was destined to become a guard, but not in the way she’d imagined.... “So we thought we’d ask you about her, Iolana. Do you recognize her?” Iolana didn’t. But she spoke gently to the child, attempting to coax information from her. The little Spiral seemed bewildered by the attention and didn’t say much that the guards judged to be significant. A blue Guardian soon strode into view. Rapu was another of the clan’s warriors, but her duties seemed to be more ceremonial. It was said that the Guardian had already completed her Search, though what her Charge was, it was difficult to say. The child was delivered into her care. The clan’s guards were content to leave it at that, but Iolana found herself curious, even concerned, about the hatchling. How had she come all the way here? “Was she driven by the same wanderlust...as I was?” Rapu eventually offered an explanation. Iolana was summoned to her den one day. The Spiral hatchling was coiled on a cushion, and her face lit up with recognition when she saw the Skydancer. “Her name is Makani,” Rapu began, “and I believe you, Iolana, are destined to be her guard.” “Like a bodyguard, you mean?” Rapu laughed gently. From a chest at her feet, she drew a length of green cloth. It shimmered with power, and upon its badge was embossed the Windsinger’s sign. This was the Guardian’s Search—or rather, her tasks: to seek out hatchlings with strong elemental magic, to ensure that they were protected, and that they learned to harness their powers. The elemental sashes helped her: They, too, were enchanted, and would resonate with those who could wield elemental magic well, even calling them to the Isle. “This artifact is Makani’s, then?” “No, Iolana. It’s yours.” The Skydancer blinked in surprise. Raptor explained, “Makani is young, untrained. She will need guidance and protection. You have been with us for some time now, and I trust your strength and judgment. The sash resonating with your magic only confirms what I already know: You are a true warrior of Wind.” There was no ceremony, but they didn’t need one: magic confirmed, indelibly, what a hundred ceremonies could not do. Raptor tied the sash in place, and Iolana felt its magic rush through her—calling up the power she, too, had within. Wind-born warrior. Perhaps Makani would be one, too. But for now... “Well, how about it, Makani? Want to go for a ride?” The child’s answering smile lit up the room—and Iolana knew, at last, that she had found her place, her purpose, in the world. ~ written by Disillusionist (254672) all edits by other users |
