______ They had told her she wasn’t very smart, ever since she was small, and it hurt Esma’s feelings. Esma didn’t understand a lot, that was true, but she believed that that wasn’t reason to be mean to her. She used to go home crying and her mama would pat her on the head and tell her that she might not be very bright, but she had a good, kind heart, and that was the most important thing. But then her mama was gone, and Esma got bigger, and there was no one to pat her head, and brush her feathers, and tell her she was a good dragon anymore.

______ Esma lived in a good lair, and her clanmates were nice, but she felt she was different. They tried to be understanding, but Esma could see when their faces fell, and she heard all the sighs when she messed something up again. Esma was lonely, and she prayed to the Gladekeeper for a friend.

The Gladekeeper answered her prayers with a Grouse Basilisk. He wasn’t very smart, like Esma, but he was kind, and he would play with Esma when other dragons couldn’t be bothered to mind her. Esma found her forever companion.
