ayers was imported. he still remembers his daughter. when your clan is bested in the icefields, the icewarden will not help you. the father or winter is too cold to extend a claw to those too weak to help themselves. it is almost inevitable that your bones be blown over in snow. ayers once lived on a ship that sailed all around the floes, and when they were seized by pirates from the emberglow, they told him he was too pretty to throw overboard with the rest of them. they collared him and dragged him home with them. to be an ice dragon in the lands of fire is to suffer. he was so hot he thought he might die before they even managed to do anything to him. what a mercy that would have been. the slavers were kinder to him than the others that ended up in his caravan; if they weren't pretty enough they were beaten and driven into the ground working for them. ayers isn't sure the attention he was given was better; the baths, the polishing; but at least he didn't die. he learned quickly not to make friends. they sold him for a fortune. only cackled and counted their coin as they handed off his leash to a ridgeback with a goblin's grin. he told him outright that he'd make an excellent new addition to their new pillowhouse; something he installed to let the real workers unwind. ayers didn't know what real worker entailed until he got there. the camp is full of slaves. slaves working the gates, in the factories. all skinny. all broken, wings clipped, unwilling to meet anyone's eyes. ayers worries for one, selfish moment, that he'll end up like that. but he's tossed in the pillowhouse and he knows that that will not be the case. the place is lavish, and he has a room, and food, and a bodyguard with lightning eyes and a bow, their wings clipped. a slave. the good thing about the pillowhouse is that almost no one uses it; it seems even the higher up dragons are too busy for such lavishness either. the bad part was that once the shaking stopped ayers was bored. he gains interest in his guard. he asks his name. they reply that they don't have one. |
