Pearl

A pearlcatcher's pearl grows more rapidly in their infant years, since they must quickly retain knowledge as well as work on them more often so they attain their luster and round shape. Pearlcatcher hatchlings often end up with pearls almost as big as themselves, and as they grow their bodies quickly outgrow their pearls, and it's expansion rate decreases with time. Because of this, infants of that breed were first used as record keepers - they could attach their memories of events much quicker to their pearls, and, surprisingly, with much greater accuracy than their grown counterparts. Since their young minds weren't yet fully developed, their memories were not colored by opinions or prejudice. Instead what they kept was a pure, unaltered version of the facts.

Keeper

In the realm of the Icewarden, memories are precious. The native breed, although with perfect recall based on their olfactory senses, has no recollection outside of those linked to smells. More than that, the isolated clans often spend decades without contact with the outside world, and memories fade and vanish into the cold wasteland.

No one is quite sure who the first keeper was, or if they have been children from the start, but nowadays they can sometimes be found among scholars or in clans deep within the Fortress of Ends.

Enchanted with powerful magic, those hatchlings are trained from birth to record everything they see and hear, keeping perfect records of any and everything that transpires around them. Though they lack the judgement to fully understand the situations they witness, those young record keepers are often used in trials or when settling matters between arguing parties, since their memories are presented with cold impartiality. In peaceful times clans will employ Keepers to memorize their bloodlines and traditions, making sure that those won't be lost in future generations.

As they witness events that shall be preserved in their pearl, the runes in their bodies glow and change, their pattern forming a transcript of what they see as their unblinking eyes take every detail in.
Over time a Keeper's pearl may become too big for it to be moved anymore, in which case it shall be stored in the vault along with the clan's most precious treasures, and a new one shall be started. Whether the new pearl will be one provided by another pearlcatcher or grown from the remains of another's egg is up to the pearlcatcher's clan, but for wilder clans the new pearl's origin is often one written in blood. It's first memory the only one that shall never be remembered.
