they say, when one wanders the wastes for too long, it begins to speak to them. most are driven mad, turning into a slobbering feral. the language of the land is too archaic for the modern mind. sounding of demons. chasing away the light. depending on who you ask, slenuma is either the same, or fluent. slenuma has lived the wastes his entire life, and never once gotten lost. there is more than luck to that. there is more than language.

Slenuma is as if a piece of the Rotrock Rim came to life. His breath is as hot and wet as the air of his home. His teeth are jagged knives of ivory, just like the jaws that surround the throat of the Wyrmwound. The maw of the Plaguebringer.

Those red, red eyes in his head are pits to the Eleven Hells, but they are always rolling, desperate to take in the surroundings. To find death before death finds him. Those eyes look as if they think more than any animal has a right to.

And he is. He is a gaunt, starving animal.

An outcast from the great mirror clans of the Wasteland, who could strip and devour a guardian in minutes. Alone, he stalks the tendrils of the Rim as if he had been born there.

Almost as if he wasn't nurtured by a dragon of flesh and blood, like he was raised by the Waste alone.

Slenuma watches and waits for dragons to come crawling from the Boneyard.

Pilgrims or warlords bringing captives, he stands guard for all. He does not move to help them, to offer life-preserving supplies, to fight the enemies that chase them.

He watches as the climb the tendrils and teeth, and into the jaws of their Lady of Rot. He watches as they throw their sacrifices and prayers, even themselves, into the boiling green acid of Her throat.

And that's all he does.

Why Slenuma has taken this vigil, nobody knows.

Some say that he hopes to be the first to see the Filthy One come forth from her Cauldron, to watch as she leads a army of rot and death to claim all of Sorneith. He will claim himself as Her most loyal follower, they say.

Others say that he's waiting for someone to come crawling from the Boneyard; a lost lover or friend.

Maybe Slenuma isn't real at all.

Maybe he's a trick of the light, a story to bring comfort to those who risk the Waste. Even if you die on the doorstep to the Wyrmwound, you will not die alone.
