Thanatos really can't tell if he despises Helios or loves him. Either way, there's no one Thanatos loves more than himself.

The co-head of the lorekeeping divison in the lair, he whispers to the reincarnate hatchlings how special they are, and how they should flaunt their favortism, for the flamecaller wanted them to Live.
The insatiably curious minds of hatchlings often run back to Thanatos for more, as who wouldn't want to know secret knowledge.

Of course, Coppermore and Marlin are none the wiser. Helios does have the intuition though, and hates how closely Thanatos is allowed to work with the reincarnated hatchlings. See, the hatchlings are not supposed to be told they had lived past lives until adulthood, not supposed to be told they are 'special' until maturity. The reasoning being that children cannot handle the implication that they are not in fact a unique individual. Most of the clan adults belive the children should be able to form themselves as individuals without being burdened by the knowledge that they already have lead lives. It is better to experience life's highs and lows of today, than to live in anticipation of a known tomorrow.

Originally, Thanatos did not tell the youthes this just for the sake of feeling special, or knowing that his knowledge can give him more importance, or even for manipulative indulgence. Oddly enough, he does because he genuinely belives they can capitalize on their 'specialness' and so they can live their lives as knowledgably as they can. Unlike his rival, he belives knowledge of yourself --not the world-- is the most valuable way to shape your life.

Because Thanatos was not born in the Flamecaller's lands.
Because Thanatos did not know why he had such a horrific fear of illness.
Because Thantos did not know why he was thrown into a panic at the smell of the burning ceremonies Imperials held.

Children, he believed, should grow up equiped to handle the nightterrors of the carts of plagueridden bodies carrying their friends.

But.. Thanatos --nor The Flamecaller's reincarnative gift-- cannot change the fact he was always an egotistical dragon. He's just egotistical with an actual reason that he is special, now. Wrapping dragons around your talons with charm and presence is quite different from wrapping them around your talons with the promise of inside knowledge. When the young and impressionable start running to a narcissist for answers in life, well, you get a borderline cult leader.

It is a shame, he really does try to be selfless, but
he has gotten too comfortable in the cussioned seat of being "god-touched"

Thanatos is the kind to embolden dragons to riot in the face of injustice. He has a knack for getting people to follow his lead. He is all too comfortable in stating that the ends justify the means.

Naomi is both his best friend and his adopted daughter, despite the both of them being pretty close in age. She and he are both the gorgeous manipulative ones of the lair.
