"He's coming far too regularly to be just a traveler!" Burst out the Mirror as her tail swished rapidly. As a scout, her job was to notify her superiors whenever she found anything unusual. She would expect, therefore, to find open hearing canals every time she returned.
Yet, after five weeks of patrolling the Easternmost corner of their territory, Drachma found the birds and wild grasses more willing to accept what she had to say than her own kin. No one wished to acknowledge that another clan might be seeking to conquer their land. Perhaps they were right, and their riches were not enough to tempt any possible attackers. The Mirror, however, preferred to remain suspicious of that Pearlcatcher.

There he was again. Bouncing up and down with that cheery step of his. He never flew. He only walked, a strange-looking bird always in tow.
Drachma growled. He was coming closer than usual. Alright, that's enough, She though, dashing forward to intercept the intruder.

Arctos smiled faintly as he stared after the approaching Mirror scout. He was rather fascinated by her devotion to her little watching spot. She hadn't moved from it even when he got irrationally close to her territory. It felt like a feat to have made her leave the tiny hill.
His smile deepened as the scout paused a few meters away from him.
"Why are you here?" She spoke with a raspy voice, common in those quiet drakes who lacked a golem companion to talk to.

"I'm afraid there might be an artifact in your lair I'm looking for." Arc answered.
"You could have sent a missive bearing your message, rather than waiting right out of our borders."
"I would prefer to avoid the whole clan's notice. In fact, I'd rather this stayed just between you and me." He could feel her instant distrust after he spoke. He continued to smile, although his confidence was beginning to waver. Perhaps this wasn't the best idea after all.
Luckily, he still had a trick up his scales.
"I may have mistaken your lair for the one on the next plateau. I was hoping yours would hold what I'm looking for, so I wouldn't have to fly all the way there. But, of course, if the artifact were here, you would surely know of it. I guess I'll have to head on to the next clan."

The Mirror settled back, clearly thinking she had rid herself of the annoying visitor. This annoying visitor, however, had other plans.

"I hope you won't mind if I allow your clan to show its hospitality" Arctos said, displaying his most disarming of smiles.
A few moments -and growls of protest from the Mirror- later, the Pearlcather found himself inside the lair. The cavern resting underneath the plateau's green grass was surprisingly well-organized, considering it was probably run by Wind dragons. Still, there was enough coming and going for Tim, his golem companion, to slip from his side unnoticed.
He would search for the "artifact" while Arctos made enough of a scene to distract the clanmembers.

"Arc? Is that you?"
Arctos froze. Arc. . . Only one dragon had ever called him that. He had hoped they wouldn't have to meet again. He would have preferred to avoid the shame.

"Arc? Is that you?" Asked Shini, a Spiral who had worked as a scout alongside Drachma for moons now. The Mirror watched curiously, wondering how the resident member had come to meet the stranger.

"I'm glad you got out of that ruin unscathed! It didn't feel right to leave you there, but. . ." Shini trailed off as he noticed something everyone else had missed. "What happened to your pearl?"
Drachma need not be a Skydancer to sense how the Pearlcatcher felt. Devastation. Grief. Guilt. Shame. They all flashed across his features before being swallowed by a blank mask. His hollow eyes met none of the gathered ones' gazes as he whispered:

"Gone."
