______ She had not been sent to fight. No, Courant chose to fight. Marching out from underneath the protection of her clan, she bid farewell to her lair mates and trekked her way across the eleven regions; her two closest friends in tow. She knew not what she was searching for but knew she had found it when she came upon them. She stood in breathless awe as a fearsome Wildclaw and a savage Ridgeback sliced through beast after beast. The Ridgeback's wings glittered in the moonlight. His bright orchid chest was painted red from the blood he had spilled. A violet Wildclaw's talons were stained crimson but still she appeared calm, her head held high as her keen eyes scanned the area. They were on high alert and Courant's heart thudded in her chest when the Wildclaw leapt mightily into the brush, swinging a trident over her head and pointed it right at Courant's chest. The tip bit into her flesh without drawing blood. A lesser dragon might have cowered but Courant stood her ground.

______ Her fury burning, Courant regarded the Wildclaw with a fiery gaze. It only lasted a moment before she side stepped the deadly weapon with surprising speed and raised her sword. Her blade met the Wildclaw's trident with a deafening clash. They danced an ancient war dance of attacks and counter attacks, parries and voids but Courant knew the Wildclaw was simply toying with her. When the dragon had tired of the game, she drew Courant in, realizing the Pearlcatcher preferred to fight in close quarters. Courant's blade sliced through the air with deadly intent as she lunged forward but realized her mistake too late.

There was too much momentum in her strike and not enough control and the Wildclaw brought her Trident down with frightening accuracy. It locked her sword's forte, the strongest part of her blade, and Courant could only watch in shame as her sword was knocked from her claws. It clattered at her feet. The Trident was swung to her throat and Courant did not, for a moment, dream of retrieving her blade. The weapon's sharp blade pressed into her neck and Courant shuddered as a thin streak of blood slicked the trident. And then the pressure and the sting of the trident were gone.

"Killing you would be a waste of talent," the Wildclaw's voice reminded her of brass marbles, deep and husky.

"Pick it up," she demanded and her face softened when Courant sheathed it. "This forest is full of enemies. They come in droves and attack in many numbers. Together, we shall fight them."

The Wildclaw faced their entire group but her words were meant for Courant.

"I will start you on this warrior path.

"And there will be a day when none can disarm you. You will fight without doubt, you will learn to trust yourself, and your foes will come to know fear."
