These cave-dwelling dragons are well-adapted to the darkness of their chosen homes... their hides are dotted with bright flecks and stripes of turquoise bio-luminescent color. When Copper Cave Dragons gather together in their subterranean homes, their own glow lights their caverns.

Any breed of dragon can adapt in this way to cave life, over the generations, but Bogsneaks, Snappers, Nocturnes, and Ridgebacks have proven to be particularly at home in Sornieth's cave systems. A diverse group is essential to any prosperous cave-dwelling clan, though; Spirals and Fae in particular are excellent at squeezing through tight spaces to explore areas of the cave system that would otherwise be inaccessible, and can then direct their larger clan-mates to the best areas to excavate larger openings. Many Copper Cave Dragons live the majority of their lives without ever leaving their cave systems at all, their labyrinths of tunnels, chambers, and underground lakes are so extensive. Clans in every part of Sornieth may have Copper Cave Dragons living beneath them without having any idea that they're there at all!

The most reclusive Copper Cave Dragons are those that live in inland regions, particularly in the Tangled Wood and Dragonhome; clans who have settled along coasts and rivers tend to leave their caves more frequently in order to fish in nearby waters, though many clans actually farm and harvest cave-dwelling species like mushrooms, lizards, and insects as the majority of their diet. There is a particularly high concentration of these clans along the cliffs of the Windswept Plateau, where they can often be seen riding the area's strong winds and thermals while fishing, and have taken advantage of natural caves along the sea cliffs to begin digging their lairs.

Because they are scattered across Sornieth and make their homes in different flights, there can be quite a bit of variation in physical traits among these dragons. All have wings in shades that match their coppery bodies or luminescent spots; some thinner-winged dragons, like Ridgebacks, can curve their membranous wings around their bodies to diffuse the light and essentially turn their softly glowing bodies into a lantern. On the Windswept Plateau, some clans have developed brightly spotted Spinner wings that make them look like colorful kites on the breeze. In the Starfall Isles, some Copper Cave Dragons spend a lot of time soaking in mineral-rich underground lakes, to an extent where crystals develop on their thick hides, covering their bio-luminescent hides but also amplifying the light, so they look as if they're illuminated from within. This is a particular advantageous adaptation for Coatls and Skydancers, who can develop crystalline structures along their feathery wings that help to protect them from the moisture of the cave systems while still allowing them to fly. Still others have developed thick Scales along their bodies, from constantly digging through rock and mineral to expand their cave systems.

Many of these dragons have developed a differing Skink coloration that makes their bio-luminescent spots larger, but with overall less light emission. Their brightest luminescence is the striping along their tails, which many of them use as lures when hunting cave-dwelling prey species; they'll twitch their bright tails along a tunnel as a lure, and then pounce on any unlucky creature who falls for the ruse.
