H I S T O R Y

- - - Garnet was born in warm, iron-rich, limestone caves deep beneath the earth. They came to awareness slowly, eyes open but unseeing in the pitch-black cavern. As they woke, they followed the low gurgling groan of the earth into a cavernous chamber half-full of bubbling, molten rock. The warm red light was the first they had ever seen, and they flew close, soaking up the warmth. Eventually, curiosity pulled them up and away, following a fresh, cool breeze through miniscule faults in the rock up to a strange new place with no visible walls or top.

The light up here was stark and blue and hurt their eyes, watery and pale as it was. It was also cold, a chill they felt through layers of dense scale and lean sinew, all the way into their hollow bones. They retreated, or tried, but their passage had caused a small rockslide in the shaft they'd wiggled out of and was now impassible. Stymied, they looked for another way back into the warm, nice mountain but were unsuccessful. Hours later, night was falling, and they were getting desperate--this wide, cold place was getting steadily more frigid and it seemed all warmth and hope was out of their reach, locked firmly in the mountain.

Then, carried on a breeze, a familiar scent of fire and ash led them to a squat, stone building with a warm red glow coming from the back. There was the familiar fire! Banked, and contained in a strange hole surrounded by all manner of instruments but nonetheless the warm, gentle heat was the same, and so they slept, curled up as close to the fire as they could. In the morning, they were discovered by the blacksmith, who had lots of things to say about "fleabitten strays curling up in front of his forge like it was a flophouse" but beneath the bluster he had a good heart. He christened them "Garnet" for the gems on their hide and put them to work ensuring that the great fire never went out. This suited Garnet just fine.
