In the depths of the Scarred Wasteland, life was hard. Only the strongest dragons and their clans were allowed to survive. Mates were chosen based on how strong and healthy they were, and any eggs that seemed too sickly were left to rot. If those did hatch, they had thus proved their strength and were allowed to be part of the clan. This was the case for Saera. Her parents were known in the clan to be the parents of only the strongest warriors, many of whom had been picked to fight for the mighty Plaugebringer in her personal army. It was an embarrassment then, when the egg that would hatch Saera was misshapen and much too small. They had dutifully flown it out a few miles to be dumped, not expecting anything to come from it. Yet a week or so later, when a scavenging team had been sent out to check on the conditions of all the eggs, it was her egg that had hatched, the rest all smashed in by tiny claws, their magic pouring out into a liquid-like puddle at her feet. She was taken back to the clan, and introduced to her parents.

Though the clan was by far one of the most successful of its neighbors, it still had its share of problems. The current king was ruthless, allowing no peace for his followers. He often drove them into pointless wars, where even the strongest came back battered and bleeding. Many despised him for this, for though they were happy with the constant victories he won them, they were tired and wished for rest. Ideas of rebellion were whispered between dragons, and a coup was planned. The old king had his shared of loyal supporters, those who dedicated themselves to battle like Saera and her parents. Saera had grown into his right hand, often sensing any act of rebellion before it even happened and putting a swift end to its leaders. She was the true force behind the aging king, and it almost appeared that she would soon replace him. But all empires must fall, as even the World Pillar eventually fell and fractured into eight. For once, Saera could not hunt down a coup in time, and a bloodbath followed. The king was killed only moments into the massacre, and Saera was soon outnumbered. They did not kill her as she demanded, for in her eyes it is better to die than be taken as a prisoner, but instead they banished her from not only the clan but all of the Scarred Wasteland.

Saera fell into a crazed state as she traveled across the map in search of a place to begin a new empire. She finally stumbled upon the Sunbeam Ruins. Though too bright and cheerful for her taste, she knew that if she didn't stop now she never would. Over the course of the next few years, dragons began to join her growing clan, and it's population swelled. At that time, she was a good queen, doing her best to allow the clan to be prosperous. It all seemed to go wrong when she decided that she wasn't doing enough to guarantee their success. She became paranoid of a rebellion plotting to overthrow her rule in the same way as her previous king. Her delusions led her to order raids on innocent families that she believed were working against her. Loyal soldiers were ordered to be executed, and advisors simply disappeared. Saera spread propaganda throughout her subjects this entire time, warning of the dangers or rebellion and ordering the tattling of anyone thought to be disloyal. What she didn't realize was that through all of this, she was sparking the longing of a change in the subject's hearts. Just as before, Saera was not quick enough in catching them, and they attacked her castle. Gravely wounded, she was forced to abdicate her power.

The new ruler took pity on her, and in an act kinder than she would have been should the positions had switched, banished Saera to one of her palaces on the outskirts of the land. This way they could keep an eye on her in case of any act to get her back in power. They weren't too good at this however, and Saera was able to employ the help of dark mages and those who wished her to see her once again on the throne. So she waits for the day that she can finally strike back.
