Biography

Written by Redtiger7736

Mooneyes was a bit of a quirky snapper for his lineage, as he was a good bit smaller than his snapper father. This, understandably, put the clan leader off of making Mooneyes a miner--which Mooneyes did not verbally protest--and he was placed in apprenticeship under his parents. His mother was the first to begin teaching him life skills, as his father was a miner and quite busy. She was a kindly Pearlcatcher who kept busy in the kitchen, creating extravagant feasts for celebrations and hardy meals for work. Mooneyes began his work with an open mind and rather excited disposition, fascinated by all the foods his mother effortlessly crafted. While he adored the chances he got to taste various foods, he was more of a menace than a help when it came to actually working in the kitchen. As a snapper, he was larger and clunkier than the elegant dishes he was assigned and often broke the plates, but when he was assigned bulkier dishes to fit his size, he burned them! His ever patient mother gave Mooneyes the benefit of the doubt for sometime, allowing him to "help" her while she did most of the cooking before finally reaching her breaking point. With a few gentle words, Mooneyes' mother sent him to work with his dad, despite what the clan leader said, and with a promise to continue making him exotic meals. Mooneyes was tentative about this new arrangement, though his curiosity about mining overwhelmed his caution and he joined his father in the caves with relish.

At first, it was quite difficult for Mooneyes to get the hang of mining, both due to his size and complete lack of knowledge. However, his father had patience and hope for his son, and slowly taught Mooneyes how to mine. For Mooneyes, the easiest part of his training was learning to read the earth, mapping their paths and identifying the tunnels that were safe. He found it almost natural, but the actual heavy lifting involved further physical training to build up muscle mass. Geode was patient with Mooneyes, understanding that some parts of it came easy and some didn't, but always pushing his son to improve. Mooneyes was desperate to please his father and clan leader, which led him to work harder than he ever had in his life. He spent many long hours in the mines, working on his own or with his father, until the effort paid off. Mooneyes had achieved his goal of rising to his father’s level of skill and was now ready to leave the clan and make his own name in the grounds they mined.

The parting goodbyes were tough for Mooneyes, as he loved and valued both his parents immensely. Tears were shed, words of love exchanged, but in the end Mooneyes left his home behind, traveling away from his birth clan to the Shrieking Wilds, for reasons unknown.

For the most part, Mooneyes’ time on the road was uneventful, there were no large raider attacks or dramatic instances of magic (to the snapper’s disappointment), but he did learn how to live well and defend himself on the road. He tucked these skills in his metaphorical pocket and continued on his way, eventually stumbling upon an older and abandoned mine that he hoped would quench his thirst for the underground, at least for a short time. The tunnels themselves were fairly large and accommodating for guardians and imperials, though the network was not as extensive as he had hoped. Mooneyes could tell that many of the paths running through the ground were unstable, though their ores were tempting, Still, he brushed off the thought and continued to explore, eventually coming upon another living creature: a surly looking bogsneak attempting to extract a difficult ore vein.

Mooneyes was genuinely impressed with this dragon--who introduced himself as Horus--as the skill it takes to remove a vein like that was rather above his current knowledge. Still, not wanting to be rude, Mooneyes offered his assistance to the bogsneak, only to have the offer brushed aside by a few terse words. He felt perhaps a slight twinge of egotistical insults rise to the surface, but he threw those thoughts away from him and instead settled on what he could do to help, regardless of Horus’ opinion: guide him. Of course, to effectively not seem like he was trying to help Horus, Mooneyes had to disguise his true purpose and do his work subtly. The latter was surprisingly easy when it came to Horus, who didn’t pick up on his tricks easy, but the former was more difficult for Mooneyes.

Not wanting to reveal his plan on accident, Mooneyes settled for not allowing himself the chance to talk, and took up a strange monologue with disconnecting topics left a right. He was not surprised to see that Horus was not paying attention to him, rather tuning him out and focusing on his job so he didn’t mess up--Mooneyes was thankfully not offended by this. As Mooneyes babbled on about random thoughts passing through his head, he noticed two things about the bogsneak before him. One, he was very good at ignoring distractions without messing up in his skillful work. Two, he seemed to be a grumpy sort of dragon, but kind at heart. Or, so he hoped he was kind. Eventually, Mooneyes grew bored of talking to the unresponsive dragon, and continued his monologue (currently on the topic of “extremely stupid birds”) and turned to the rocks around him, hoping to locate a geode. This, in turn, reminded him of his parents, and his brief time as the world's worst cook--or the world's best charcoal maker if one is an optimist--and he began to discuss food, as per usual.

As he examined the rocks around him closely, Mooneyes continued his one-sided conversation on mince-meat pies, one of his favorite delicacies made by his mother. He assumed that Horus would still ignore his discussion, but he soon realized that he no longer heard the crashing of a pickaxe as the bogsneak attempted to retrieve a gem from the stubborn rocks of the wall. Finally, Mooneyes looked up to find Horus watching him intently, a strange look on his face, before finally asking his opinion on spice usage in aforementioned mince-meat pies. Though Mooneyes was startled by this, he as absolutely delighted to get a response and launched into a now two-sided conversation about the finer points of food.

For some time, Mooneyes coaxed the relatively quiet bogsneak into a full on conversation and enjoyed himself in the process. It was rather invigorating to have someone to share his expertise on cooking with once again, if only in theory and not in practice. He was vaguely disappointed when Horus stopped mining, having lost interest in the stubborn gems, as he quite enjoyed watching the skill with he worked on extracting. It was, however, nice to see a more gentle side to the surly dragon, though he found the quirks of the bogsneak created interest during their conversation. When Horus finally let the gems win this round, Mooneyes helped him carry his haul up to the surface, making sure to lead him on the safest path as many of the tunnels were rather rickety. Once in town, Horus invited Mooneyes to dinner at a nearby diner, where they continued their conversation on food and mining, though not necessarily at the same time.

It grew later in the night as the snapper and bogsneak talked, discussing everything from how not to cook a micro-goat sirloin to wondering why fae dragons were so incredibly picky when it came to food. They recounted tales of their underground adventures, though admittedly Mooneyes had quite a number fewer of those that Horus. The snapper had adventured into the realm of food long before Horus, but Horus had the upper hand on him when it came to the caves. Finally, when the moon had begun its descent into the sky and both dragons had run out of breath to recount stories and argue points, Horus admitted defeat and yielded to the need to sleep; Mooneyes had no such needs at the exact moment, thanks to his snapper bloodline.

As Horus rose to take his leave, he gave one last surprise to Mooneyes, that being asking him to join his current clan? The bogsneak said the benefits included further discussions with him, a home, and adventures into both mines and diners. Mooneyes hardly had to think about, accepting his space into a new home quite easily. When he did finally arrive at the clan, he was startled to find many of the other dragons impressed with his ability to talk with and befriend Horus. Slowly, Mooneyes settled into his new life and made good relations with many of the other dragons, all the while drawing Horus into a more social and amicable life (for the most part).

Despite his friendship with the relatively surly bogsneak, aka Horus, Mooneyes was a rather talkative and friendly dragon. He, of course, remained passionate about food and mining throughout his life, enjoying the long and drawn out discussions on such topics with Horus. When their conversations carried on so long that even Mooneyes grew tired, Horus was always amused with a rather different version of Mooneyes, that being a philosophical one, often pondering the importance of things such as fun or love. On a typical day, Mooneyes would display his easy-going and forgiving nature as he socialized, often not taking offense to insults or forgiving those who wrong him. Unfortunately, the latter would be less endearing and more naive when it came to actual danger, though Horus tried his best to keep him out of such situations. Horus was a rather strange buffer at times, when Mooneyes would misread social cues or not see through a dangerous veil he would pull him out of the situation with ease that came from too much practice. Horus and Mooneyes shared many things, their love for food and the underground, the want to help each other (though in very different ways), and a kind of love between them that transcended the dangers of the lands around them. Together, they would adventure into danger and fight through it together, all the while enjoying their meals and drawing gems from the dusty earth beneath them.
