Ever since he was born, Isaakios has lived up to his name. Meaning 'he laughs, child of laughter', he has always taken life with a smile on his face and laughter in his voice. Once his brothers were born, it became easier to shine brightly for they became the joy of his life. Athanasius was a stubborn child and Erasmus a diffident youth, but he held an endless patience for both of them. There was nothing that made him happier than watching the two of them blossom and grow as individuals.

Life was good, but it was not destined to stay that way. Years of content passed, but one day the body of a fellow peryton was found dead with one of his antlers through his chest, one of the only ways to kill their species. Isaak was now part of the council, so he joined the others in a meeting, and it was decided that war with the manticores was coming. All those with enough training were to fight.

War came quickly, and it only took a few days to realize that it was not just a war, but a slaughter, and it would not end until one species was wiped out. Those that were not yet fighting, including Erasmus, were called to war. Isaak knew the youngest brother was not ready for a real battle, but nothing could be done. He ended up watching Erasmus get struck down before he could reach him.

The war ended quickly, but in the end neither side won. One manticore and only a handful of perytons survived, including Isaak and Athan. Isaak tried his hardest to help his brother out of the mental hell he was in, but nothing worked and soon Athan left to be on his own, leaving Isaakios in a broken village and with a breaking heart.

____Athan?" Isaak rest a hand on his younger brother who was facing away from him. "Where are you going?" He feared the answer. The younger male had not been himself lately. It scared him, the way he had been wandering around so lifelessly.

"Away." Athan turned around, fixing Isaak with dead eyes. "I can't stay here anymore. Please don't try to stop me."

Hearing that hurt, but Isaak smiled softly and rest a hand on his brother's cheek. "I won't try and stop you." Perhaps he would be able to find himself out there and would come home his old self. "I love you, brother." His hand dropped from his face, and he watched the last of his family turn and walk away without a word. How can you be smiling when our brother is dead? They were words Athan spoke to him after the battle, and they rang through his head as he watched the other male disappear from view, his smile beginning to fade.

"I smile for you. Come home soon."

____Isaakios crouched so he was at Erasmus's height and smiled at the younger brother, taking in his thought filled and bothered face. "You are doing well. What is wrong?"

"I can't do this. You are the best fighter I know, and Athan works so hard to catch up to you, while I don't even know what my weapon will be." Erasmus looked down with a frown, staring at the pile of weapons by his feet.

Hand resting on the younger male's cheek, Isaak's thumb brushed underneath his chin and lifted his head so his little brother was looking at him. "Don't compare yourself to everyone else. We can practice with all of them until you decide the weapon or weapons you like best. We have all the time in the world." Leaning down, he grabbed a pair of deer-horn knives and handed them to Erasmus. "Let's continue."

Isaak blinked away the memory, tears forming in his eyes. Whatever happened to all the time in the world?
