DIVER'S CLIFF PEARLCATCHERS
___________ |
These Pearlcatchers build their colonies deep under the Sea of a Thousand Current, clinging to the side of underwater cliffs or weaseled in open caves. Their population thrives in the abyss, where their bioluminescence helps them communicate with each other. They are of dark, vivid blues in color, punctuated by the characteristic bioluminescent patterns of the breed. Varying among individuals, the patterns turns up on the entire body, breaking up their silhouette in the darkness of the depths. Dragons who are related will be able to recognize others from the shape of these patterns alone. Adapted for life under the water, they have shorter, thinner manes, webbed feet and pointy teeth to catch their slippier foods. Their wings are thicker and of a lesser span, making prolonged flight quite an ordeal for them. It is not uncommon for them to mutate additional glowing parts as well as more whiskers. Despite their aquatic adaptations, they move well on land, and are notably more muscular than regular Pearlcatchers. Even if they are far removed from their origin in the Sunbeam Ruins, these dragons retain some of their breed's signature haughtiness - while they do not look down on other species as inferior, they remain very independent, and outsiders to their colonies will struggle to make their way in. The few who make the effort to train for combat make good mages and warriors alike. They are on the heavier side for their breed due to having adapted for swimming and thus able to take and give more hits than their surface counterparts, but will also make good casters. Their ideal role is one of a flexible backline support warrior, switching between a few short assaults and a quick retreat behind their allies to heal themselves and their team. The abyssal environment being a tough place to find food, they are notably not picky about what they eat. They forage around the cliffs where they live, grazing algae and catching miscellaneous invertebrates indiscriminately. Inspired by: Bioluminescent twilight zone fish, Coelacanth, bird colonies |
