Biography

"Heroes always get remembered, but you know Legends never die"
- Emperor‘s New Clothes

A great darkness, made of black swirls and appearing to have what are many heads, is facing towards and almost looks to be surrounding an earth-like planet. The image is taken from an official lore entry, detailing how The Shade first attacked Sornieth.

The Shade was old. It had always been there, since the universe came into existence, hiding in the shadows and waiting. Lurking. Watching the life around it grow. At first, it had been just that and it was content with that.

With its presence, The Shade caused an uneasiness in the creatures around it. They were wary, telling each others stories about the things lurking in the dark, all the while said things were listening, reveling in the fear that shook the creatures' voices.

Over time, however, the creatures started to forget. The stories that had once spread fear and panic were now laughed off as fairy tales, in which only the very young or naive believed. The Shade wasn't happy with that. It had been content with just lurking in the shadows, devouring only a few creatures every now and then to spread some more fear. But if that wasn't enough, it would change its ways.

The Shade would not be forgotten.

A dark, black mass spread around the planet, devouring every living thing it came across, and growing stronger with each of them. It left only a few survivors, and The Shade observed with awe as the fear and hatred it had longed for reappeared in the creatures' eyes.

Over the centuries, however, The Shade's interest in those creatures and their fear started to fade. Its countless eyes focused on the sky, a new urge started to grow inside it. And so it spread across the entire planet, absorbing everything into itself before concentrating its mass in one place, its form of pure darkness, for mortal eyes impossible to even look at. In its search for… something, it left its old planet, now bare and empty, without looking back.

Years after leaving in search of something new, The Shade finally found another planet with life on it. It was smaller than its homeworld, but the creatures there were greater in both number and diversity. They watched the sky turn black as a great darkness descended upon them, and they screamed and cried out in fear.
It was glorious.

A few thousand years, The Shade tormented this new planet with its presence, but its interest didn't last forever. It was born of fear, but, as it realized, what it longed for was to be feared by many, to feel the cries of countless different lifeforms echo through its formless body. And so eventually, The Shade devoured this planet also, before moving through the galaxy in search for the next.

With each planet it wiped out, The Shade grew stronger, more terrifying. Each time, its stays grew shorter and shorter, the fear it fed off becoming less and less satisfying. It needed more, but nothing was enough.

Perhaps once it had ravaged all there was, once there was nothing left, it would find an answer.

The Shade never once stopped in its path, never once found an opponent who could match its immeasurable strength. At least until the day it came upon this one, fated world, occupied only by Wyrms powerful enough to change the shape of their world within the blink of an eye. The Shade would ravel in their screams, feed on them, and move on. Or at least, that's what it expected to happen.

Never before had any creatures succeeded in fighting back against The Shade. Many had tried, but they had been powerless against this embodiment of terror and darkness. So when it started to notice its power diminishing upon being hit, its first reaction was confusion, soon followed by anger. The Wyrms' attacks didn't do a lot of damage - the biggest wounds inflicted were that of its pride.

Their battle raged on for centuries, and slowly but surely, The Shade's power was draining. At this rate, it would be losing. But it wouldn't have that.
Pulling back, the great darkness left behind only a decoy, to have the Wyrms think they won, lulling them into a false sense of security as The Shade went on to consume more planets, replenishing its power for when it would come back to this world.

By the time it returned, stronger than it had been before, the Wyrms were gone. However, as it approached the planet, it was greeted by a curious Drake. The Shade was wary at first, wondering if it had been expected. And it had. As it crept closer, it started to notice a strong barrier of magical energy surrounding the planet. The Drake, however, seemed to be using that energy in a laughable attempt at communication, weakening the planet's defense in the process.

Shattering the barrier was easy. Dealing with the backlash of energy that escaped as the barrier burst, not so much. The Shade took a great hit from it, its remaining energy not even enough to leave the planet. And so it seeped into the ground and water to rest for a long time.

When its consciousness started to become active again, The Shade found itself in a vibrant world full of life. At first, it wasn't very powerful and could barely absorb smaller creatures. Over time, however, its strength started to grow again - slowly, but steadily. And with each organism absorbed, its thoughts became clearer and its actions more planned, more controlled.

Long ago, The Shade was feared, its name terrorizing those who heard it. Those times were over, and with the Wyrms who had become Drakes living in this world, it was necessary to lay low, to appear as scattered and harmless as possible. Every passing day, it corrupted more creatures, some even dragons, creations of the Drakes. Every passing day, The Shade's influence and power in this world grew, bit by bit. It would take millennias, if not longer, for it to regain its old strength. But it had time.

After all, The Shade was eternal.
