Cimex was never able to glance in the mirror without his invisibility cloak on. How he despised the way his body was constantly shifting, splitting apart and reforming again. It didn't hurt physically, no waves of pain rippled through his body as if it were water. No, the pain was entirely mental. Eventually, he was captured, tied up, and dragged deep into a cavern system. It was here that he noticed another spiral chained to the wall - Seabreeze. He realized that this dragon suffered a type of pain similar to his, only physical. So then he hollowed out a small crevice and remained there, keeping her company during her agonizing element shifts. Seabreeze knew he was there, even called out to him numerous times, however she had never seen him. Until one day...

Cimex slowly opened his eyes, his entire body aching over from sleeping in an odd position. The air was freezing cold, which was odd. His little lair never experienced this type of temperature change. It was after a few seconds of thinking than he realized that he wasn't even in his little hollow. He was in the middle of a completely different lair; one that was littered with a hodgepodge of bones, treasure, and spikes of ice. Where am I? He wondered as he looked around. "So..." a voice echoed in the room, "It's been you who has been keeping me company all those months." Cimex scampered back when Seabreeze emerged from behind a boulder. She smiled. "I would like to thank you. It made those times down there much more bearable." she then made eye contact with him, despite Cimex being in butterfly form. "I assume you will be staying here from now on? I wouldn't mind a butterfly friend in my room; you'd be better company than Seraphina to say the least." He felt his face growing hot. No..not now. I can't be falling for a lovely lady like her! I'm far too monsterous! "S-sure, I guess I could hang around. It would hurt for me to have a home." Cimex's eyes flicked to the entrance, where a giant ridgeback was entering. "Hey Seraphina, look at this new talking butterfly friend that'll be living with us!" Seabreeze gestured to Cimex. The ridgeback showed no signs of amusement, her eyes were void of emotion. "Sure, I guess. As long as he keeps to your side of the room and not mine, he won't end up as an ice cube." Seraphina grumbled as she adjusted her cloak. "Yay!" Seabreeze exclaimed. "We're going to be best friends! I just know it!" Cimex blushed. Maybe things won't be so bad anymore. |
