The youngest son of the House of Alnilam, a soft-winged creature of feathers the color of the dawn. He hears some colors, blue wind chimes in the distance, and the drumbeat of black and staccato flute notes of silver. Some days, when he sees the colors of a sunset over the ruins, he thinks he hears the faintest beginnings of music. His tongue is heavy with gold, stars buried within his slender chest. He sings songs the same pink and apricot and cream as his soul, let there be light let there be light let me be light. They say his voice is sweet as honey and melting brown sugar, his lyre strung with twisted sunlight that trembles beneath the touch of his hand. Crowds gather around him bright-eyed, hypnotized like Orpheus enthralled the river in the ancient days of the world. (They do not see the razor-sharp perfectionist's heart beneath his sunlit eyelashes, the way he ripped his fingers on the threads of the lyre until they dripped hot and holy blood. They do not see the way he presses his fingers against the soft undersides of his arms in the long dark of the night, until his skin blooms with dusk-blue and lavender.) Solace closed his eyes every sunset and twitched his ears, waiting for the right day - the one where the music would be the loudest. It was different from the chattering of neighboring clans that often carried in the wind - the ones that his clanmates insisted was the "music" he was looking for. This was more than the sounds of celebration and dragons. It was whispering of plants and earth, humming a tune he could barely hear. It was of new lands to come, speaking in a language not known to dragons. He waited every day, only hearing glimpses of this mysterious song he couldn't explain. And yet it never got louder. Solace knew he had to pursue it. To travel by his ears and change direction on a whim from where he could hear it best. He would hear the song one day, not from home, but he would hear it clearly.
