"Anything cracked will shatter at a touch."

______ Entangled in brambles, he could feel their thorns scratching his skin. Small trickles of blood were running down his feathers. It was cold, so cold. But he needed to get away. Away from all theses sick creatures that were his family. Or he would end up as one of them. Staring into the darkness, drooling and swaying back and forth to a tune only they could hear. Only he could hear it, too, sometimes. When the night was darkest, he could see things moving in the shadows. And from far away, a haunting melody reached his ears. Was he going mad? Were those things even real? Some of his siblings went missing, but nobody seemed to care. Where had they gone? Were they dead? Or had they been taken by something worse than death? He didn’t know. The only thing he did know was that he had to flee. Gritting his teeth, he dragged his small body forward deeper into the thicket. They wouldn’t get him. He’d rather die than go back. Shivering from cold and exhaustion, he finally reached the end of the thorny bushes. Lying down on the muddy ground, he sucked in the damp air. A deep rattling cough shook his body and his chest tightened. Not now, he begged desperately. He needed to keep going, be still and silent. But he couldn’t control his coughing, he never could. As he desperately gasped for air, he heard noises behind him. Tears of pain and frustration welled up in his eyes. But he kept crawling forwards, filled with grim determination. Finally, he managed to get on his feet and began to run. Fear and desperation gave his frail body strength he never knew he had. Ignoring the sharp pain in his lungs he kept running. Until his feet stumbled over some rocks at a steep slope and he toppled, headfirst, down the side of a hill. The impact knocked the air out of his lungs otherwise he would have screamed in pain. But only a whimper passed his lips as he fought to stay conscious. Someone had lit a fire in the enclosed basin. Trying to ignore the pain of his bruised body, he staggered towards it. Because light meant hope…

______ Suddenly, both guardians went silent. Akuma looked up to his friend Tyr. “What is it?” he asked. But he only shook his head and stared into the darkness. Janus sniffed the air. “Not more than one.” He said. Though how the blind Warden could actually detect that was beyond Akuma’s understanding. He stared intently into the darkness but could see absolutely nothing. After a while he heard some staggering footsteps. Someone was approaching their camp. His two companions tensed, and Janus started sniffing the air again. The small figure of a hatchling appeared in the darkness, stumbling across the uneven terrain, and finally collapsing to the ground. Akuma rushed forward, ignoring Tyr’s warning hiss. The poor creature was covered in cuts and bruises, and it appeared his paw was broken or at least badly strained. He was murmuring under his breath. Akuma bent down closer until he could understand his words. “Please, please don’t leave me here…please…” he was pleading. Tyr extinguished the fire with a blow of his tail and Janus suddenly appeared at his side. “We are not alone any longer.” he whispered. Akuma looked up. Red eyes were shimmering softly at the top of the hill. “We can’t leave him here.” Akuma said. Janus looked down at the whimpering hatchling. “No, we can’t.” he growled and scooped the small coatl up in one of his massive paws. “Something is wrong with those creatures up the hill. Their auras are all messed up. I’ve never seen anything like it. We should go. Now. Quickly.” The urgency in his voice frightened Akuma. He shot one last glance at the ghostly figures with those gleaming red eyes, then he leapt into the air.

______ Personality: Meliander, or Mel as he is called by most, is a deeply troubled coatl. Whatever he witnessed and suffered as a hatchling, has broken his mind. He rarely sleeps, and when he does, his dreams are haunted by twisting shadows and strange music. He cannot stand the darkness; his den is illuminated by fireflies he keeps and breeds in intricate glass jars. They glow in many different colors, and he makes sure every corner is lighted. No shadows are tolerated by him. But sometimes a sound or an image takes him back to his childhood memories and he breaks down, screaming and scratching his body in self-harm. Restraining him only prolongs his fits, so his clanmates watch rather helplessly, trying to calm him down with the sound of their voices. Since his small canine companion was gifted to him by Janus, his episodes have become less severe. Nobody knows what torments he endured, or if they were even real. Janus insists that there was something terribly wrong with the dragons they fled, and that Mel’s soul has been touched by something evil. But Mel himself isn’t evil or twisted, during his fits he never harmed anyone but himself. Which is why, he is rather pitied than feared by his clanmates.
