HADYN
"It wasn’t my intention to come back. Sornieth just got incredibly lucky.”

zRba1D1.gif
“Yeah, I knew 'im. Everyone in Willowind knew Hadyn Raissel. His clan is the entire reason we were afraid to fly the currents leading to Stoneshard. Not a merchant went by that wasn’t taken down, and even if he didn’t kill most of ‘em, not a damn one of them ever made any profit off of their hard work. No, they never had the chance, because their gold wound up in his coffers and their goods ended up in his cave, way over yonder past the bamboo forest to the south. We knew where it was but we wouldn’t dare go near it. He’s big and he’s mean, and his wife’s even meaner, and we’re just Spirals who ain’t never had a reason to fight.

“We tried to hire a guy once--called himself Dirk, was a farmer out in Breeze Bridge--because we thought that somebody bigger and meaner would do us some good, and Dirk was definitely bigger and meaner. Imperial, good thirty meters long, strong as an ox from fieldwork, hated everyone but loved a good scuffle. Wouldn’t you know it, though, that he wound up working for Hadyn in the end? Silver-tongued devil swayed him to his side by jiggling a bag of gems in his face, probably more than any of us have ever seen, and our hired help was soon up there tacklin’ traders out of the air with the rat.

“Then that necromancer came. Clan leader liked him at first, said he did the keep good. Then things started goin’ missing, things started happening, dragons started going missing, and we got a-feared. Leader wouldn’t do nothing about it but, for some reason, Hadyn took off out of his cave like greased lightning one evenin’ and chased that shady fella into the forests. We heard a scuffle, some roarin’, some magic, then it got real quiet-like.

“We ain’t never seen the necromancer or Hadyn since. Guess that solves both our problems, eh?”

-- Citizen of Willowind Keep, CY-134

"Well, he’s slick, I’ll give you that. Ain’t met a dragon with a tongue that silver in my entire life. Hell, I don’t even really know what it is he or his clan does for The Abandoned, but I’m just so fond of shooting the $#!* with him that I ain’t gonna complain about him being around. He’s a real charmer, that one.

“Now, I ain’t too keen on some of the other bits about him. Heard a rumor he’s undead, and I know he’s into all that necromancy stuff. And Howlite claimed he cursed her, but she claims a lot of stuff, so that's debatable. He’s pretty awful to look at, to boot. But, y'know, he always knows what to say and when to say it, and he ain’t blown any of us up. Yet. Credit where credit is due.”

]HISTORY
Hadyn was the heir of a crime family in a small region known as Willowind Keep. He operated out of a bandit cave, surrounded by smaller and weaker clans, and was feared as one of the most dangerous highwaymen in the land. He led his band of cutthroats in violent raids, eventually meeting his match in the rogue necromancer. Following the interception of one of the necromancer's shipments of rare (and illegal) artifacts, the two began to clash violently over the ownership of the stolen goods.

It was a fight Hadyn ultimately lost, done in by his foes' dark magic, but not before making a mess of the surrounding land. Fields were burned, crops were destroyed, livestock were caught in the crossfire, and entire villages were razed to the ground. None of it was intentional, but that didn't matter to the neighbors who found their livelihoods ruined. Indeed, when the dust settled, Hadyn's crew defeated and the necromancer long gone, the run-of-the-mill farmers who owned the nearby land let out a massive sigh of relief.

Unbeknownst to the commoners, however, the necromancer saw fit to reanimate Hadyn as a sort of cruel joke. Unfortunately for him, however, Hadyn's powerful will and residual anger saw him quickly break free of his sorcerous restraints. He gathered up the few remnants of his floundering crew and founded The Graveborn on the ashes of his former empire. Together, they followed traces of their nemesis until the trail ran cold; the necromancer vanished into thin air, and no amount of hunting for clues led them any further towards their goal of vengeance. Without an obvious course of action, Hadyn reluctantly settled his clan in the nearby canyon of Irthskaar, and talked his way into a parcel of land and a place in the council.

Now represents The Graveborn within The Fifteen. He’s known for his silver tongue and has nary an enemy despite his shady past, and he's found creative ways to utilize his criminal crew to better Irthskaar and its people. Honestly, he seems to be trying to do better with the second chance he was given, especially since he has a sneaking suspicion that the magic sustaining him won't last much longer.

ACCIDENT
Because he was killed by the undead, and has to live as an undead, Hadyn isn’t fond of the undead. They're cold, dangerous, and make his skin crawl in a way that a spider might scare a hatchling. There's nothing about the unliving that inspires an ounce of confidence in him, and he would prefer to keep any necromancers or ghouls in Irthskaar at arms length if he could help it.

The exception is Accident, a handy little byproduct of an overzealous attempt at casting a spell that was maybe a tad too complicated. Despite the fearsome appearance, Accident is a perfectly reasonable amalgamation of sass and spirit who is more apt to insult you than curse you to a violent death. Convenient, since Hadyn would rather avoid the latter at all costs.

It already happened once. Let's avoid repeating history.
