Nearly a century ago, two rival clans were embroiled in a fierce territorial dispute. No one remembers who started it, simply the battles that came after it. Avare led his clan fiercely, decimating the rival clan when ever a battle broke out. He was on the fast path to victory when he became tenacious in his attacks, seeking to strike first against the enemy instead of simply defending. It was an ambitious plan, his scouts had found what they claimed was a hidden base that the rival clan leader made his plans with his generals. It was the break Avare could only dream of. So he called the order for some of his best to dig into the mountain side above the cavern and plant explosives, enough to bring down half the mountain. It took weeks of slow cautious work to avoid being discovered. The gold dragon instigated several skirmishes while the work was being done to help keep the rival leader oblivious to their actions high above the cavern. The day came, and Avare watched with his scouts and his best dragons at his side. The mountain shook as tons of rock collapsed onto the small cavern. He watched the cave in with a sense of completion. His rival was said to be in the cavern at that time, and he trusted his scouts completely. That should of been the end of it then. His clan could finally sleep soundly at night without fear of attack. Or so he thought. He ordered his dragons to start clearing the rubble, a wise warrior always confirmed his kill after all. It took a few hours before shouts suddenly went up, and then they went deadly silent. Avare immediately went to investigate what they had recovered. What he saw stopped him in his tracks, he stared horrified and what they had revealed. They hadn't destroyed the clan's base of operations, but their nesting grounds. Every dragon there was completely silent, they all knew their grievous error. It was then that they heard the rest of the rival clan charging in, their leader who was supposed to been in the cave in was leading the charge. Guilt and shame paralyzed the once proud leader, and the ridgeback quickly brought the guardian down while the clans fought. He didn't even think to fight back until it was too late, darkness swallowed him, and his clan was decimated. But that wasn't the end. He awoke sometime later, the familiar view from under his helmet greeted him, but the sights themselves were new. It was in a cavern, carved out in a similar way to the one they had destroyed. He tried to move his body, but found it simply wasn't there. It hit him after some time of panic, the ridgeback had one of his mages work some magic to trap him inside of his helmet. He/his helmet was hanging on one of the walls like some trophy, and he was trapped. He was angry at first, and then guilt overwhelmed him again, the nesting grounds... his men.. his clan... They were all gone. He lost himself to despair as he sat on that wall. The rival clan leader still speaks to him, cursing him, and Avare soon discovered to his dismay that he could even pull the gold dragon temporarily from his prison. He soon began to dread those visits though, and fear struck him whenever he heard the familiar footsteps of the red. When he saw those gold eyes filled with the desire for vengeance. He was trapped, escape wasn't even an option he could consider anymore. The helmet still hangs there, even long after the ridgeback had lost his own clan, the dragon had kept him as a trophy. Sometimes if you look at it hanging there on the wall, you can see just the smallest glimmer of purple where eyes should be as Avare watches the world around him as a prisoner in his own armor, armor which used to bring him so much pride. |
