xxxx Skylark is a young ambitious dragon who longs to find his purpose in this world. Leisurely wandering throughout the Windswept Plateau and gliding in the gusting breeze that is ever present aren’t enough for him.

--x--x--x--

One day, frustrated by doing nothing and wishing to find his purpose in life, Skylark decided it was time for him to seek an audience with his clan elders.

“We understand that you are not happy just merely existing amongst your fellow dragons.”

“You are correct in your assessment, honorable elders. I feel that I was born for something more, something important.”

“Skylark, we have discussed what we think is best, and have come to the conclusion that you are to be tasked with a mission. You are to go into the wider realm, infiltrate our rival clans and bring us information that will be beneficial to our survival. Find out everything you can about their battle tactics and strategies. This task is of great importance; go now, and return only once your mission is complete.”

Skylark was overwhelmed with emotion. He was excited and scared, but this was what he had been waiting for. He refused to fail.

As the wind blew the leaves in the trees, and the sun was slowly setting behind the distant mountain range, Skylark set out on his adventure. He didn’t know what would be in store for him, but he was certain he could handle anything.

--x--x--x--

The stars shone brightly in the clear night sky, creating beautiful constellations that helped to guide his way. He had never travelled this far from home before; he hoped he would be able to navigate his way back.

This had been one tiresome day. Skylark was ready to stop for the night when he heard a long, melodious howl in the distance. Something told him he wouldn't be able to sleep easy knowing there were terrible creatures lurking in the shadows of the night. He spent the night on watch, staring blindly into the darkness, snatching a little sleep only in the brief moments before the dawn.

As the breaking dawn brought forth a new day, Skylark felt surprisingly refreshed and ready to find one of his clan rivals. The landscape was becoming ever more barren and cold as he approached the southern icefield.

Suddenly, snow everywhere! Skylark was not prepared for the blizzard he found himself engulfed in. If he couldn't find some kind of shelter soon, he would freeze to death.

In the distance Skylark could see a faint glow flickering through the dense ice and snow. It was his last hope. If he could only make it there, the source of light would be his salvation. Anything would be better than the slow, aching cold.

Much to his relief, he found the light was a roaring bonfire inside the mouth of a cave. He didn't care who or what had started the blaze, he was just thankful for the warmth it was providing him.

Skylark must have passed out from exhaustion. He was startled awake by the feeling of being watched. He moved, and felt softness. He had been covered by a large pile of heavy furs.

As Skylark came to his senses, he saw a beautiful female tundra standing over him. She had all clear crystal ice fur that seemed to glisten in the light of the fire. If she had been standing outside in the blizzard, you probably would not have even seen her; she would be ideally camouflaged in her surroundings, giving her stealth. This dragon would be a formidable opponent if he had to fight her in her element.

Skylark hoped it would not come down to a fight and that this stranger would be friendly. He tried to anticipate what might happen next, but before he even had a chance to think of something to say, she spoke.

“Hello! You’re finally awake. Are you feeling okay? I thought you were dead when I found you unconscious by my fire. My name is Raffica. You must not be from around here if you are crazy enough to travel through a storm like this without proper apparel!”

“Yes. My name is Skylark, and you are correct--I am traveling from the Windswept Plateau, and I had no idea how quickly an ice storm could overtake me. I have never been anywhere but my home. You saved my life. If I hadn't seen your fire and you hadn't come along and find me when you did, I surely would have perished. I am eternally grateful for your kind hospitality. I owe you a life debt.

“In my clan, if someone saves your life, you become forever bound to them. Therefore I, Skylark, pledge my life in service to you, Raffica. I am yours to command as long as I live, or until my debt is repaid.” Skylark bowed his head.

Raffica looked astonished. “No! I don't think that is necessary! Anyone would have done the same. It was nothing special. I couldn't let you die when I was able to help. As far as I am concerned, you don't owe me anything. If you want to be friends that is fine, but I am not taking you as my servant!”

Skylark sighed. “If that is your wish, I shall abide by them and do as you say. I would like to be friends, though, and maybe one day I will repay my debt to you whether you like or not. How long do these storms usually last, anyway?”

“There is really no way of knowing,” Raffica said, looking out at the swirling snow. “Sometimes they go as quickly as they came, and other times they last for days or even weeks. All we can do is wait it out. Luckily for us, I am overly prepared--I have enough rations to last us for at least three days. We could possibly stretch it to last four days if necessary.”
--x--x--x--

Skylark and Raffica got to know each other quite well during those stormy days stuck in the small cave.

They spoke about their homes, their families, and the things that they liked to do for fun. Skylark was becoming very fond of Raffica and was getting depressed thinking about his mission. He would have to deceive this new friend who had saved his life. By gaining her trust, he could find out all he needed to know about the ice clans battle tactics and strategies for his clan elders. It was what he was sent to do. But that didn’t make it easier.

--x--x--x--

Skylark woke up three days later to sunlight streaming into the cave. The blizzard was finally over, and not a moment too soon. Any longer and they would have run out of food and water.

“Wake up, Raffica! It’s morning, and the storm has passed!”

There would be time for Skylark to make his difficult decision whether to betray his friendship, or betray his clan elders and abandon his mission. For now, he was happy that he was forging a life of his own and had made such good friend in Raffica.
