His father had a dark past, and his mother had an even darker one. His sister had a fragile psyche and often suffered from nervous breakdowns, so he felt a little out of place within the family of sorrowful dragons.
So he tried to become what he could not: scary. It was like a fish trying to walk on land. Chompers was simply not meant to be mean, mysterious, and unnerving or any combination of the three.
His attempts often had the opposite effect, leaving dragons barely stifling giggles. Although he could spook strangers with his foreboding appearance, he never was able to keep it up for long. He was well-loved in the clan, but wanted to explore Sornieth. All of those faked growls and carefully-crafted dramatic gazes cast across an endless sky couldn't mask his adventurous heart.
He met many dragons on his travels and became friends with most, if not all, of them. No one could resist his playful heart and child-like attempts at being scary. To most, he was still an innocent hatchling thrown out into the cold and scary world.
One clan especially attracted his fancy. The dragons there were kind and the food was plentiful. But something deeper drew him there. He felt the need, the aching, colorless need, of his joy. Sorrow and seriousness was thick in the air, and he wanted to bring happiness and light to the situation.
So he did. He brought Wind culture with him. Carefree flights on winds sweetened by delight became common in the clan. He also tried to spread love for adventuring.
He wanted a serious purpose when he was younger, so he could fit in. Now, he had it, hidden deep within his antics made to cheer others up. In a world of regrets and sorrows, Chompers became a candle for those in need of his cheerful glow.
