　Hiram was found as a young outcast by Cameron on one of his foreign excursions with the late great clan leader Ida. Originally found as an egg, his adoptees had been in for a bit of a shock. By all appearances he was like a tundra yet not and shade-influences had been suspected. He was cast out far from the other members, only loosely tolerating him for his knack for excavating (important for his original blacksmithing clan). Hiram became a dramatic case of neglect that was compounded by his woefully unsuited for the Ashfall Wastes physiology. Ida stole him away in a bit of a heist aboard Bartram's airship. His past clan presumably dismissed his disappearance as a mining-related death.

Growing up, a lone gaoler among tundras, Hiram felt like an ugly duckling. He's toyed with the idea of trying to reach out to his heritage since to get a better grasp on himself but what little tale he has heard of gaolers terrifies him. He's afraid of what he'd learn and how that would affect his self-image. Plus, the Fortress of Ends is not exactly a prime vacation destination. Instead he opts to think of himself as a tundra, albeit an older lineage of them. Hiram has mellowed out over the years but he's still a little self-conscious about his non-Tundra heritage. In many ways he tries to live like his tundra clanmates going as far as to blunt his horns and to only eat plants.

After Cameron, Hiram is the second-oldest surviving member of the Fallow Moor Clan. He's slow to open up to others and can be a bit of a recluse. He shares a close relationship to Birdylou due to her accepting and outgoing nature and the two have a relationship like older brother and younger sister.
