Biography
Cathair
Lord commander of the Emerald Guard

HISTORY The words were still ringing in his ears: ”The armistice has ended. More than four millennia of peace and prosperity are over. All trade routes to and from the Scarred Wastelands to the Viridian Labyrinth have been shut down. Until further notice, there will be no scouting or scavenging expeditions into the Scarred Wasteland anymore.” Cathair stared in disbelieve at his Clan’s matriarch Fahlyn. Beside him, his sister Falyse took in a sharp breath, stretching out one paw to touch his side, almost as if she needed to steady herself. A stunned silence was followed by the matriarch’s announcement. The whole Clan had gathered beside the Standing Stones, the spiritual and magical center of the Forgotten Sanctuary. Dragons from every breed and eye color stared wide-eyed at the Council of Elders standing in the weathered circle of stones. “We don’t know exactly what happened. But it appears that our ambassador Liefa planted the First Seed in a quarantine zone which resulted in heavy casualties among the Plague dragons. It seems she was infected with some foul virus that meddled with her mind. She contained the destructive power of the weapon somehow, don’t ask me how, I don’t know. As she was allowed to leave unharmed, it is clear that she wasn’t to blame for her actions. Nevertheless, the armistice has been broken. We are at war.” An anxious murmur erupted amongst the crowd. ”The Plague ambassador Yugona is missing. And with her the Final Sickness.” Falyse tightened her grip around his feathers, her eyes were wide with fear. Several dragons gasped in horror and the murmur raised to a cacophony of shrill and anxious voices. ”Silence!” Antafes roared. The huge Guardian’s deep voice echoed from the nearby trees and the crowd fell silent. Fahlyn cocked her head at her mate and resumed her speech. ”She was supposed to the escorted back the Scarred Wasteland, but she left her quarters and nobody knows where she went. The Treewardens are looking for her, but we don’t even know if she left on her own account or was taken. But there is no indication that the Final Sickness has been unleashed. So there is still hope.” The crowd shifted uneasily, clearly not reassured by their leader’s faith into the decency of a runaway Plague dragon. But they remained silent, anxious to hear what else she had to say. ”The Behemoth has been closed off, the Treewardens are on high alert and Liefa is due back at the Great Tree in a few days. Nothing is known about the condition she or the First Seed are in. We must hope the destructive power of the weapon can be contained at the very heart of the Labyrinth. If not, well, the Gladekeeper may have mercy on our souls. We are obliged to do our best to protect and secure the Sanctuary. If you wish to leave in this dire situation, you are allowed to do so and no harm will come to you.” At this point, Antafes let out a disapproving growl. He rose to his full height, tail twitching angrily and positioned himself beside his mate. ”Remember your oath.” he snarled aggressively. ”You have sworn allegiance to our Clan, you have sworn to protect your home, even if you weren’t born here. But if you want to break your oath, for whatever reason, you are to leave this place until nightfall and never to return. The Council may have sympathy, but I have not. And neither do my Wardens. Any traitor will be hunted down and brought to justice. Our justice. Do not count on the Council to interfere. Thus, look into your heart and soul, and decide where your true allegiance lies.” His eyes scrutinized the crowd of dragons, his gaze lingering just a few moments longer on the Afflicted, Cathair and his sister. Falyse hissed angrily as she met Antafes’ stare. She didn’t like the First Warden very much and his implications were explicit. He hardly listened to Fahlyn’s words of reassurance or the anxious questions asked by his fellow clan members. Cathair knew there would be no answers. The world as they had known it had become unhinged. Strange things were going on all across Sornieth. This was only a small piece of the puzzle. “Did you see that arrogant, self-loving, stupid…” Cathair turned around to his sister. “Stop, Falyse. Before you say something, you regret.” Her eyes were shooting daggers but she didn’t finish her sentence. “You must know him by now. I don’t understand why he still ruffles your feathers that easily. The safety of the Forgotten Sanctuary is his only concern. And he is right. Though he could have chosen wiser words. And don’t forget we, as well as some of the Afflicted, do have family ties in the Scarred Wasteland.” Falyse hissed angrily. “Do you say he is right to doubt us? You can’t be serious Cathair. Most of the Afflicted are outcasts, left to die somewhere in the desert by their family. This is the place that saved them. And I remember the oath I swore, I won’t march into the Scarred Wasteland to wage war but I will defend my home against anyone who threatens it. Even against my own kin.” Her eyes were gleaming with anger and a low growl was rumbling in her throat. Cathair glanced at his younger sister. He sometimes forgot how fierce she could become. And how much she loved this place and the dragons, well most of the dragons, that called the Sanctuary their home. She had been pretty much cast out by their parent’s Clan, her loyalties lay with their Nature Clan. As did his. He sighed. “Look, dear sister. I doubt it will come to that. We…” His attention was drawn to a flash of gold in the light of the setting sun. He narrowed his eyes, trying to get a better view against the blinding sunlight. There it was again. Antafes had seen it, too. As had the other warriors of the Clan who were swiftly taking defensive positions. But then he recognized the silhouette of the dragon in the sky. A feeling of dread crept its way up his spine causing him to shiver. As the huge Imperial spread his mighty golden wings to slow his descent, the crowd hastily made room for him to land in the middle of the clearing. The ground shook slightly as Tenoh’s paws hit the ground and he stumbled unsteadily, exhaustion etched in every line of his face. His flanks heaved heavily as he tried to catch his breath. Finally, Tenoh raised his head and his raspy voice echoed from the trees: “An Emperor is wreaking havoc in the Sunbeam Ruins. Our greatest nightmare has come true.” His statement was met with stunned silence. A small Imperial hatchling uncurled himself from the mighty adult’s front leg and fell clumsily to the ground. Huge deep-blue eyes looked anxiously at the crowd that stared at him, horrified. Cathair reached out to his sister, he could feel her trembling and his own fear was reflected in her dark red eyes. |
