T.he expanse of the Veil was endless, steaming clouds of fog enveloping everything ahead of or behind, leaving the souls strewn across it to huddle in clusters or drift alone in pockets of mist. If there was a happier place for the dead, Bess had not found it in what felt like decades of wandering, though part of her hoped desperately that it had not really been that long, that he might still be waiting, still be searching. It was in the gloom of the Veil, she was given the time to realize the irony of her situation. The day she truly began to live was the beginning of the countdown to her death. Before she met Mistral, her life had been content but ultimately empty, tending her father’s inn, caring for the tenants and neighbors around her, cheerfully rebuffing a myriad of suitors, well-meaning but aimless. The night Mistral crashed into her life, blood soaked, but still somehow able to charm her, she truly began to feel alive for the first time. He ignited a spark within her soul that still burned even now, in this dark place. She drifted within the Veil, a pulsing light, kept aloft by memories of his embrace, his gentle kiss, his daring plans for a future that always, always included her. Even when he dreamed so wildly she wasn’t sure how anyone could accomplish his lofty goals, she always was swept up into believing anyway – and he always found a way.

Until he didn’t. Until he couldn’t. Until he took on Conquest itself, and the consequences were too dire. There were times she fell into despair. Darker memories surfaced, and her light grew dim. He just…he couldn’t account for everything in the end, couldn’t save his life and hers. She didn’t blame him. She saw the pain in his eyes as hers grew glassy and cold, saw the anguish and resolve hardening in them. He would find her. If she just held out a little longer, he would find her…but her resolve grew thinner with each languishing day, and soon she ceased to drift at all, hanging within endless mist, a light nearly winking out. This was really the end, wasn’t it? She would never stand in moonlight, waiting for his footfalls on a darkened path. She would never see him sweep into a bow before her, looking up at her with his familiar rakish grin. She would never again feel the rush of exhilaration that came with being swept into his arms as he robbed her of her senses with a kiss. A heart was not meant to lose this much..

It was in this haze that she found the Lady T, a deceased noblewoman with fire enough for the both of them. Lady T was determined that she could find a way back beyond the Veil. She had been watching the comings and goings of the dead, and the emissaries that ferried them to their resting places. As she explained this to a listless Bess, a spark fizzled back to life. Bess remembered. She remembered one of those emissaries – a dragon named Riot. Delighted with this news, Lady T insisted they track Riot down. She was determined that this was not the end of her story. She had life left to live, and Bess, Bess did too. She gave Bess something she’d lost in her time beyond the Veil – her strength returned to her, and her hope was renewed. She would see Mistral again. And…she did.

Mistral had been fighting to find her as well. He’d stolen Riot’s talonclasp pendant from Nightning, the witch who’d stolen it to begin with, used it to slip into the Veil, and had been tearing through the trials and terrors of the realm of the dead, desperate to find her. They drew closer and closer to one another, witnessing all sorts of horrors in their trek. Finally, though, finally they were reunited. Their eyes locked across a foggy expanse, and Bess’ heart raced for the first time since her death. In the next moment, she was in his arms, something she feared she would never experience again. Never again, he swore, never again would he let her go. Never again, she breathed, never again would she leave his side. He clipped the talonclasp pendant around her neck, and life began to flow back through her veins.

Their escape was frantic. Bess’ return to life was unnatural in both planes of existence, drawing the attention of those that would destroy them for the sake of destruction and those that would destroy them for the sake of restoring balance alike. They did not have the luxury of threading their way back through the realm of the dead the way that Mistral came. Instead, they broke their way through the Veil, tearing it irreparably. Mistral and Bess were free, but from the gaping hole, thousands of dead also burst free, spreading across Sornieth.

The reunited lovers now found themselves in the middle of a rapidly developing battle of the ages. The dead, led by the ambitious Lady T, were determined not to be pushed back beyond the Veil. The task of repairing said Veil fell to the emissaries of the Horsemen – Riot, Ash, Firebird, and Mistral. With Mistral refusing to return the clasp, would the other three be able to unite together and force his hand, or would their own infighting spell their doom? What of the witch, Nightning, ever clever and desperate to have the pendant returned to her? If the emissaries could not succeed in returning Bess beyond the Veil, could she?

Do these lovers stand a chance at remaining together, or will they be just another two souls lost in the greatest battle the Triumvirate’s clan has ever faced?
