xxxx As an egg, Pinocchio was unaware of the world around him save for one tiny voice, which said “Your calling speaks to you differently from others. Embrace it and don’t fear its burdens.” As a hatchling, his colors blended with the world around him, as it was during the fall season with the trees dancing in bright colors. Like his father, his wings were made of the same fall leaves, tightly scrunched together to give him the appearance of having wings but being unable to fly. At first, he was proud to have such a unique trait, allowing him to stand out from others. As time went on and his hatchling friends began to fly, he was left behind and felt lonely.

When his clanmates took to the sky, Pinocchio explored the world from the land. He had a knack for finding obscure areas where he could sit and enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds away from others. Yet, those same places of hidden beauty also left him thinking for far too long and far too deeply into his pain…

He cursed his inability to fly, his colors that symbolizes a season where things seem to die and fade, and his loneliness. When he saw a creature trailing all by itself, he asked how it can bear such a lonely life. When he saw animals that had at least one other for its company, his whole body and attitude drooped in sadness and envy. Pinocchio even thought about his purpose, the faint words he vaguely recalled when he was not yet hatched.

One fall day, he was walking through a forest filled with yellows, reds, and browns. It was pleasant to hear the wind rustling the leaves and even more fascinating to see the few leaves that danced amongst the breeze. He saw one brown leaf that seemed to jump from the limb of the tree and then began its intricate flips, twirls, and hovers with the help of a warm gust of wind. Mesmerized by the moves, he imagined the leaf to be a dragon – himself, finally taking to the sky. He subconsciously unfurled his wings, feeling the breeze blow through the many leaves that formed them. He felt every weave and swirl of the falling leaf as though it was his own body flying.

Yet, as suddenly as the moment started, the leaf greeted the ground with a sigh of the fading breeze. Pinocchio’s heart plummeted, feeling despair that the leaf will never get another chance to take to the sky again – like him.

His mind thought of something else too. If the leaf could never leave the branch, it could never reach such a beautiful moment. The leaf that never changes will never get the chance to dance like the fall leaf did. Perhaps that was the trade-off. If one was to really live in life, then one must take the chance to jump from the tree and take the opportunity of being suspended in air, dancing and making the most of the moment that was given. Yes, all things that begin must end, like the leaf finally reaching the ground, but to never get that one moment – it would almost be like a waste of life itself.

He turned his head towards a bright opening through the trees. Well, there was no sense to waste this moment in his life. He picked up the tiny brown leaf that had taught him so much and tucked it in his wing. Then Pinocchio began his walk towards the new journey before him, courage and purpose now renewed.
