Eugene Clan Medic | Scout —–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–——–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–— Eugene was born deaf like his mother, surrounded by a scary world that he couldn't hear to understand. While this made his mother reclusive, it made him curious. This was one of the things that drew Tyna to him. While she has always had trouble saying no to a misfit, she was irresistibly drawn to the little hatchling's strength and ability to overcome adversity. She took him in personally and treated him like an adopted son. Her mate, Petrichore, took a liking to him as well, and would often let the hatchling curl up in his lap while he played his lute, so Eugene could feel the vibrations of the instrument, even though he couldn't hear it. The first thing that Tyna did upon integrating Eugene into the clan, was to meet with his mother and father and learn some of the signs that they used to communicate. Eugene was a smart hatchling and had been trying to learn common Draconic through lip reading, but Tyna insisted that the rest of her clan needed to learn at least basic signs in order to make communication easier. She planned it as a surprise for him, and when he stepped out of his den for the first time to meet the his new family and found a whole clan of dragons who could understand at least some of what he said, the little hatching was overjoyed. Eugene has always wanted more than anything to be useful to his clan. When he was young, he begged to be allowed to come on hunting, gathering, and scavenging expeditions in hopes of finding a unique role that he could fill. While his excellent eyesight made him generally very good at spotting things and a rather fine scout, the inability to hear always proved to be a bit of a disadvantage - especially when it came to avoiding danger or communicating with his clanmates, who couldn't always get his attention to give him signs. The first of those issues was solved quite by accident. This being a nature clan, many of Eugene's clanmates had strong affinities with the creatures of the Veridian Labyrinth. This meant that animals would often "follow" dragons home from their various outings. One such animal was a calico cat. No one is quite sure where it came from or who it followed into the lair, but it took a liking to the young quiet wildclaw and the two became nearly inseparable. As Eugene grew, the cat decided that the most logical place to be was on Eugene's back, nestled in the cozy confines between his wings. The cat did not like flying, but as long as Eugene was on the ground, the cat was curled up between his shoulders. It acted as a sort of service cat, alerting Eugene to things such potential dangers or approaching dragons with subtle gestures like tail flicks, tensing muscles, or the sudden cessation of purring. This made it possible for Eugene to go out scouting by himself without having to worry about something sneaking up on him - a freedom which he greatly enjoyed. While he loved the excitement of venturing beyond the clan, he found his true calling closer to home. Eugene had taken - or more accurately, been taken as a mate by Tyna's adopted daughter Ennoia, the fierce pearlcatcher in charge of protecting the clan and it's surrounding lands. She had admired his bravery and his pragmatic outlook on things. While he was worried that he wouldn't be a suitable mate for the strong warrior princess, she told him that how he chose to face his disability showed her infinitely more about his strength of character and meant far more to her than the fact that he had a disability. As their affection for each other grew, he took to patching her up after fights. The more serious the battles were, the more strongly he insisted that she let him care for her. He found that he made an excellent medic. His keen eyesight and steady hands let him work quickly and accurately. The fact that he couldn't hear was, for once in his life, an advantage. It made it far more difficult for something to distract him while he worked. Happy to have finally found something that suits him perfectly, he quickly began offering his skills to others of the clan. He still goes off on scouting missions, especially when he also happens to need more medical supplies, but he knows that he has a place now where he is happy and utterly indispensable. —–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–——–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–— |
