Atsushi was born in the water flight, with their gift for swimming and their view of time as stretching in both directions, forward and back in an endless river. However, his gift of prophecy is so tiny as to be practically nonexistent. This drew him to history, initially, and for a while he found a place he belonged as a clan historian. But over time it became clear that he needed to leave the water flight entirely; its intensity and its constant focus on prophesying were not for him. So he struck out on his own. He chose the wind flight as his adopted flight, drawn to its lighthearted friendliness after the solemn, dark prophecies of water. However, he found his home in the Sunbeam Ruins among the scholars and historians. Atsushi belongs to the scholars' arm of the Enclave. Instead of studying things outside the clan, he records its history and doings and maintains its library. He might also mediate disputes that aren't serious enough to bring to Kira or Misa. He's well-suited to this, belonging in his heart to no less than three different clans as well as being fundamentally kind-hearted, despite his tendency to be sassy at surprising times, and willing to try to see everyone's side of the story. He's drawn to his mate En because of her sense of whimsy and her intelligence, which typically manifests in unusual observations, off-the-wall questions, and rambling, somewhat bizarre monologues. ("Atsushi, do you ever wonder whether this bowl actually wants to be used for soup? What if the clay hoped to be made into something fancy, like an offering bowl? Maybe it's disappointed.") Atsushi's also a caretaker by nature, and En's extreme laziness gives him an outlet for that. They both fell for Kinshirou at the same time, a (literally) fiery, intense believer in the pursuit of truth and its application in justice. Instead of breaking up over it, they decided to invite Kinshirou to join their relationship, and it worked. Atsushi thinks he's beautiful, although he also thinks it would probably do him good if he relaxed a bit. Between them—but honestly, it's mostly Atsushi's doing—they've amassed a large friend group made up of all types of different people in the clan. There's Ryuu and Akoya, and through them, Io; there's Yumoto; and there's Ibushi. Through Ibushi, they have a connection to Sora and his family. They haven't been absorbed into the group, but there's friendship there. Members of the group take baths together in the river, join in En's strange conversations, and do other relaxing things together. In his free time, Atsushi enjoys reading fiction, often of a slightly risque variety; taking long, relaxing baths; and doing logic puzzles.
