B I O G R A P H Y

Kumonryu was supposed to be a sage.

The first thing she knew was the sensation of falling, newly-hatched legs flailing in an attempt to overpower the swirling currents sinking her downwards. In a moment, her mother had scooped her up, taken her to the surface to get her first breath, but the terror of drowning etched itself on the muscle memory of her limbs. When she returned to the water, her parents conversed in hushed tones that went over her head - “magicless,” “cursed,” “powerless.” All she noticed was the small maelstrom her brother, born only moments before her, was creating, and she struggled out of her mother’s arms.

Ryu was born to two gifted mages, and even before she was born she was expected to continue the family legacy. Their latest nest - two perfect eggs - was already emanating energy, warping the currents around them to lift and cradle them. It blocked their prophetic powers, obscuring their future. When her brother hatched, the gyre around him was so powerful his parents were unable to even touch him. Curious, he cradled his sister’s egg in his arms and experimentally attempted to take a bite. Much to his surprise, it shook, cracked, and out she tumbled.

It was immediately apparent that something was wrong - rather than giving off the same magical energy as her brother, she was floundering, tumbling down into the depths, and her future was still blank. Her brother’s gifts had disguised her own lack of magic, protected her until she hatched. Now, she had to face the world herself. As she grew up, Ryu learned that she was different - her brother and the newest hatches would meditate together, and the ocean responded to them, curling into shapes of the future. All she gained from sitting in the waves was saltwater up her nose and an aching in her lungs for air, the air she gasped for so much more desperately than the others. She was set apart, an uncertainty no one knew what to do with.

Kumonryu quickly realized she couldn’t stay with their faltering smiles whenever she failed to keep pace with her siblings, when she fought tooth and claw but could not coerce the waves into abiding her will. Her mother’s Enchanting Goblin whispered stories of Arcane to Ryu, and she listened intently, dreaming of a place where her strength would be welcomed and not scorned. Eyes weary, she stole enough meat for a few days’ journey, watching for when her absence would be unnoticed. Finally she headed out, calling to her family that she was going hunting, then disappeared into the blue.

Ryu travelled through the Scarred Wastelands seemingly without incident until she woke up, groggy and nauseous, with a concerned Spiral hovering over her. She’d been poisoned by a Heartred Croaker she’d eaten and only survived thanks to the help of the Spiral, who introduced herself as Katerma. Hitting it off, they decided to travel towards Arcane together.

Finding that the magic of the Starwood Strand caused Kumonryu’s poison-weakened heart to stutter dangerously, the two worked their way towards the Crystalspine Reaches. Once there, they met a Pearlcatcher who encouraged them to come hunting with her. Little did they know that she was the ruling queen of the Bowers clan, scouting them out. After dealing skillfully with a particularly angry Molten Wartoad, she invited them to join, and they quickly accepted.

Kumonryu serves as the clan’s familar caretaker, training the non-Beastclan creatures that arrive at the clan’s cave and attempting to keep them from ravaging the food stores. When she’s not covered in animals, she can be found hunting and gathering, her itch to explore ever-present. She’s often getting in over her head, but somehow it all seems to work out-

for now, at least.

____Tlexictli is Ryu’s familiar, a Molten Wartoad that followed her home after Ryu saved her eggs. Ryu is the only one who can correctly pronounce her name, with the rest of the clan referring to her as “Lexi” or “That Accursed Giant Frog that Drips Lava.” Much to everyone but Ryu’s discomfort, Lexi has decided that any friend of Ryu’s is a friend of hers that should be greeted with a headbutt. Thankfully, they’ve realised she’s easily sated with magically giant flies.

____Katerma is Kumonryu’s - friend? girlfriend? Who knows. The two met in the Scarred Wasteland when Ryu accidentally poisoned herself and passed out. Katerma watched over her until she recovered, and they decided to head towards Arcane together. As they travelled, they learned to fight well together and grew close. It was their impressive fighting skills and teamwork when they faced off an angry Molten Wartoad whose eggs were in danger that gained them an invitation to join the Bowers clan.

____The two still work well together, often going hunting with each other or sharing a meal and chatting about their days. Ryu supplies Katerma with the poison dart frogs she needs for her line of work, and in return, she’s the only one allowed in Katerma’s lab while she’s working. The rest of clan is wary of messing with either of them, knowing that if they hurt one the other will kill them in a millisecond. But who’d want to?
