Biography
It’d be easy, you know… The quiet thought is intrusive and Rubyfate is aware of the location it spawned from. Gruffly, he huffs and turns his head away from the light filtering into his den; and the creature whispering in his ear. You know what they say about you, right? 'The Emperor-in-Waiting.' The huff shifts into a low rumble of displeasure, ears twisting to pin back. Not once did the Imperial ask for this running commentary of his life through a sadistic lens but here he was, listening to it anyways. Gripe all you want. We both know they’re just waiting for us to snap and kill them. They keep us away for their own safety, wont trust us to guard or work. What else do you expect? The dulled ivory of teeth flash across his crimson stained maw, frustration pinning his eyes into narrow slits. Of course he knew what was said behind his back, the dragon was far from stupid. They had gotten him many support animals, many ‘friends’, over the years of peace to keep his sanity in check but it was nauseating to pretend to be okay when every word spoken to him was drowned out by a cacophony of screaming; a tidal wave of whispers and dissonant howls. I tire of this. I tire of playing nice with the rabble. I tire of pretending like I have forgotten how sweet blood tasted upon my tongue. The corners of his lips twitch outwards as a low, dangerous growl built upwards from the very base of his chest. If he closed his eyes, Rubyfate was confident he could bring forth the metallic tang that made his mouth water at the thought alone. I tire of waiting for us to finally be rid of this facade–..! “Enough!” The singular word is loud enough to carry across the empty space between the Imperial and the cavern entrance that sheltered him from the neverending sounds of his clan beyond. A sharp exhale through his nose and a squeeze of his eyes shut is not enough to cover the soft squeak sound that carries back along the walls in quiet reverberation. Sharp crimson eyes open and fall upon the darkened form of a Pearlcatcher, no older than a few months, that stared up at him with bright pastel pink hues that glistened like gemstones; clarity struck like a lighthouse washing over the turbulent sea to rescue the drowning Imperial among his own demons. “Dad…?” Aether’s voice, cautious but not fearful, reaches his ears and Rubyfate is beholden to his child’s needs. The dragon’s head drops down, pressing gently to the Obsidian child’s snout; dwarfing it yet never causing harm. “I’m fine. I did not… mean to shout.” Whatever thoughts flickered through his child’s mind seemed to quell and settle in favour for a brighter sort of smile. “M’kay… Adel came and visited today–...!” And in childlike wonder, Rubyfate settled to listen to the retelling of his son’s day. It was foreign how Aether’s perspective on life was so much brighter than his own, how simple things such as a Fae and a Ridgeback giving him such basic praise was world altering… In an anti-climactic turn of fate, Rubyfate found his mind still content. At least they could agree on something; Children were innocent and not to be harmed, and they would give anything to keep Aether from befalling harm or ill intent. That rumble had long since subsided for a softer sort of purr, if one could call it that; Rubfate’s snout to the ground as the smaller hatchling clawed and climbed over his head with feet prodding and kicking into sensitive skin. ...Maybe, it would not be so bad to keep ourselves together for a little longer. A grunt and a huff in vague acknowledgement, eyes never straying from the tiny galaxy settled atop his maw with no distress to what it had caused in the past.
