Lore

Dawn broke as usual upon an organized scene. Dragons were racing to and from on a scorching July day. Of course, the festival preparations were underway. A great influx of dragons would arrive within the next week for the carnival and the Boss would not accept low productivity anywhere.

While everyone was racing about to avoid a scolding, a small hatchling opened his soft flaxen eyes for the first time. He was in a small room, all alone. Dusty shelves lined the walls, barren of content. A cracked door led out of the musty room into complete darkness. Curious, the hatchling decided to venture forth in search of something to eat, preferably a juicy piece of grilled meat.

To his disappointment, there was no steak outside of the door, only an empty hall greeted her. He walked down its twisting path, searching until he came to a much larger room. This room was well lit, yet completely silent. Unlike the shelves of the previous room, these were lined with various rectangles and squares of various thicknesses. Wondering if the squares held food, the hatchling pulled one out and examined its contents.

He opened the square and saw a delightful piece of meat pictured on it next to a bunch of meaningless scribbles. Happy to find meat, the hatchling began to eat the oddly bland image until he heard a shrill shriek behind him. A shocked coatl stood there in awe of the hatchling before him. He swiftly came to his senses and took the square, or cookbook as he called it, away from the ravenous hatchling.

The coatl took the hatchling to another storeroom and presented it with a dried piece of meat from one of the containers. While it was not a juicy steak, the hatchling eagerly devoured it while the coatl poked and prodded at it with numerous questions about how a defenseless light hatchling could end up there. Alas, all the coatl was given was a look of confusion from the hatchling's big blue eyes.

Realizing that the hatchling must have been abandoned there, the coatl sighed. A grand library filled with records pertaining to every aspect of life in the Shifting Expanse was no place to raise a hatchling. He decided that he would take the hatchling to the market tomorrow so it could find a proper home. In the meantime, he would teach the poor creature that books are in no way, shape, or form of acceptable food for a nocturne.

However, the coatl kept putting off his trip to the market. He would rationalize that the alphabetization of the cabinets took precedent; that the reports turned in every hour needed to be filed; and that the spreadsheets needed to be cataloged and maintained lest the Boss enact his fury upon everyone. Months passed by as the hatchling grew and learned to respect the library and its librarian more and more for his dedication to his job.

One day, the coatl got word of a summons to go fight in a great battle to prove once and for all that science always prevails. As he was too important to send due to his status as record keeper and head librarian of the institute, the now grown hatchling would be sent in his stead. With a complete lack of emotion, he pushed his protégée out of the door and closed it on him for the last time.

The young dragon knew that it was his duty to serve the Stormcatcher as a good employee, but he had no desire to go into a life of panic and stress. All he wanted was to curl up with a book and forget that there were issues with the world that caused everyone to argue about the best magic type or the best breed to be.

Instead of turning towards the lair of the Boss, he fled in the opposite direction, wanting to be anywhere but here where he had no choices. He kept flying away from the orderly ways of lightning dragons until he found herself in a land ruled by chaos. He could hear explosions of unknown origins, the laughter of hatchlings as they discovered that the crystals turned their tongues pink, the harmony of a completely unorganized area. He decided that he would continue in to somewhere a little less crazy, yet fate suggested otherwise. The wear and tear taken on his body caused him to fall to the ground, the impact softened by a bush of some sort. The last thing he heard was a wail filled with great sorrow over the destruction of yet another spicy pepper plant...

Ruari awoke in a small cave segment covered with soft furs. The smell of tantalizing meat filled his nose as she decided to venture forth as he did so long ago. Unlike the first time, he found his steak and a lair full of new friends willing to accept her. Ruari found a home among the chaos.

Months later, Ruari found himself situated at a library of his own, only half an hour's flight from where he landed. This library was far different from his birthplace, however. It was not simply a storing place for papers no longer worthy to see the light of day. It was a community building where hatchlings would come to hear stories and learn how to read. It was where students from all four houses would come to gain research for their papers due tomorrow. It was where elders would come to enjoy the company of a well-read book they first laid eyes upon as a child. Ruari's library became a place for all dragons of Arcane to share.
